    Approved for surgery!

I’ve been thinking about having wls for years but only started pursuing it in the last few months. I was approved yesterday for a gastric sleeve! I’m paying out of pocket so it was easier for me to qualify but I didn’t expect this process to be so quick. I was originally hoping to get it done this summer but my doctor was shocked I wanted to wait so long and we decided to have it done spring break (I’m a teacher so I wanted a time I wouldn’t have to take any sick days). The nurse is supposed to call me this week for sure to book it and set up the payment plan. It’s kind of scary that it’s going so fast. I was expecting at least a 6 month process between asking my doctor and getting it done but it’s zipping on by. Sorry for the rant, I’m excited and nervous!

    Surgery Date: 2/5/2021

Honestly, it’s going to be amazing. The first two days was difficult for me but after that it was smooth sailing. It is so amazing actually seeing weight going down when I step on the scale. I feel like I’m becoming normal human shaped, and like I’m not trudging through life. The biggest change for me is not feeling like food and eating has such a powerful hold over me any longer. I still enjoy food and eating but I don’t feel the compulsion and insatiable hunger. This surgery is an incredible gift and I think you should be excited. Nobody can understand the daily struggle that is life as a morbidly obese person unless they’ve lived it.

    9 days out issues

Sounds like you may need to call your surgeon especially with the low grade fever just in case you're getting an infection. I think the one normal common thing is feeling tired and ran down at your stage. I did a lot of sleeping the first 6 weeks. Between healing from surgery to the restriction of calories,it doesn't give you a lot of energy. I'm 10 weeks and started to feel a lot more energy about 8 weeks out. If I do a lot one day the next day I'm usually wiped out. My doctor said that's normal till around 6 months out. I hope you feel better and they can get to the bottom of why you don't feel good

    It's back??

My appetite came back around six months post op and it comes and goes regularly Being 3+ years out I still cannot (in a single sitting) eat even 1/3 of what I used to especially if I follow the rules of 30/30/30 However if I decided to eat over longer stretches I can eat a bit more. So I remain vigilant about my diet (but I make small exceptions for special occasions) and I try to stick with as many rules as I can I hope that helps and Good Luck ❤️

I feel sorry for you as I know what you are dealing with. Having three surgeries back to back is so hard, I can only imagine. I had to do a endoscopy and had a 2 days rest and then went in for surgery. I think you can get PTSD from all of this, and it hurts to know that this is a elective surgery. We all went into this with high hopes and dreams of changing our life for the better and instead we dealt with more trauma. I had a spinal surgery in 2019 and I developed a drop foot, which was a complication from the surgery, which I still deal with. I have struggled with depression prior to this and it just hurts. I have went back to the ER and I get good support there but where I live it is overrun with covid patients, so it isn't the best place to go. My surgeon is very kind and I have his number. He comes to see me in the hospital every morning. I am doing a bit better but I still stay in bed most of the days. Your advice is great and I agree that I need to get back to a routine. I am less emotional now, I also think the meds they us on make us more emotional. I wish you a speedy recovery!

    It's back??

There was another thread on this topic just the other day...i’d include a link, but couldn’t find it quickly so gave up... In any case, I think the cycles/phases of not wanting to eat/food aversion/disinterest is common (for those that have instances of not wanting to eat...some don’t). I’m 2+ years post op and I still go through it sometimes (sans the nausea though, cuz i wont try to eat if i don’t want to). In fact, i just went through several days of it a couple weeks ago, and after my appetite went back to my “normal”

mine completely went away for the first two or three years. It gradually came back, but it's not as bad as it was pre-surgery. A couple of over-the-counter antacids will usually take care of it. I did mention it to my surgeon during one of my follow-ups. He sort of shrugged and said "bummer". So evidently it sometimes does come back - although I'm not sure how common that is.

Hi everyone: I know that it may take some time for people to respond but I keep going to the doctor to complain but its not helping. In 2015 I had the sleeve but after losing 50 pounds, within 5 years I gained it all back. In July 2020 I had the bypass. I'm down over 110 pounds which is amazing. The problem is that I'm finding that even foods, that I originally could eat after surgery, I now can't eat. Almost everything I eat makes me nauseous or I get sick. I'm literally dependent on protein shakes and quest bars as my only source of viable nutrition. I was prescribed zofran but so far that hasn't helped at all. Did anyone else have similar experiences? Any guidance, thoughts, tricks or food suggestions would be appreciated. I really have found that all natural proteins make me sick. Thanks, Phil

first week is from the IV fluids they gave you in the hospital. Some people gain as much as 10 lbs from that (I can't remember how much I "gained" - maybe 4 or 5 lbs). It can take up to a week for it to work its way out. Also, almost everyone has their first stall within the first 4-6 weeks after surgery. It's usually the third week (thus, the "three-week stall"), but not always. Mine was weeks 2 & 3. During week 4, it broke and I dropped like 6-8 lbs practically overnight.
