    Endoscopy Monday

I work in a GI department, and you should never wake up with the scope down your throat. How terrifying and uncomfortable that would be! An EGD is only a 5 minute procedure, maybe a little more if biopsies are taken, but it is very quick and the anesthesiologist should have kept you asleep during the entire thing. General anesthesia should not be necessary for an EGD. That is overkill. MAC (Monitored Anesthesia Care) with propofol is the best way to go. You breathe on your own and did not need an endotracheal tube, you are completely asleep and comfortable for the procedure, there is no nausea, and you wake up quickly and feeling great. I would sure talk to the anesthesiologist and let them know that you do NOT want to wake up! That is their job - to keep you safe AND comfortable!

I'm not sure this kind of thing would be too helpful, because people lose at all different rates for all different reasons - age, gender, metabolic rate, starting BMI, activity level, whether or not they lost weight prior to surgery, how closely they stick to their plan, etc. I was a slow loser from day 1, which some very insensitive medical resident pointed out to me - showing me a chart of where "most" patients are at point X, and pointing out how far behind the curve I was. It really bothered me because I stuck to my program about 99% of the time that whole first year. What else was I supposed to do? Change the fact I was female and post-menopausal and had a pokey metabolism rate? Luckily, I resolved to prove the jerk wrong and ended up losing 100% of my excess weight, blowing pretty much all the other patients in my co-hort out of the water. But I could have responded the other way - thinking I was a failure, and thinking that he'd just confirmed it. as long as follow your program and your weight trends downward (allowing for the occasional stall along the way), you're good.

    Second Guessing This!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I am so relieved I posted this and you shared your experiences. Wow how similar. This makes me feel SO much better. I'm going to do it. I just really needed to know this has happened with good results. In regards to the surgery, when we first met he and I discussed that the sleeve was what I really needed to do because I am on oxygen. It would be less risk because I am at "moderate risk" right now. Then after the EGD he found some things and thought he would need to do bypass, but he would let me know. Well, no one ever did let me know. I found out the way I said. Anyway, no biggie to that. But I haven't asked him if he can select another hospital. I think I may do that. If not, again his reviews are great so that's the most important part. Again, thank you so much. I am nervous enough about everything and really don't like adding on the fear of being at others mercy and not feeling at ease. But hell, welcome to the healthcare system, right? Second Guessing This!

I've heard some clinics are really overwhelmed right now because so many surgeries were put off earlier this year because of COVID, so they're playing massive catch-up, but even in light of that, some of this stuff you mentioned is weird. Like not discussing which type of surgery with you? Or the surgeon signing a nickname? as for the hospital, is there a specific thing people are complaining about? It could be something that may not affect you... I loved the hospital I had my plastic surgery at - the staff was great and I loved my surgeon - but their billing dept (which was actually outsourced - so not at the hospital) SUCKED. That hospital didn't get the greatest reviews either, but a lot of them had to do with the horrendous billing agency.

Burping and pain in your upper abdomen/epigastric region (from gas or???), can be symptoms of GERD. Probably a good idea to contact your PCP or surgeon’s office if symptoms persist. Do you take anything for GERD now?

    Husband's

Sounds like your husband might be scared of the coming changes that he has no control over. Have you said to him something like, " I understand that you can't feel happy about this, but I would like your support. It is going to happen with or without it, and I would rather not be resentful that you didn't support me during this time." Then tell him how to support you, specifically. Most men I know do very well with specific instructions. They just are not very intuitive!😏 The man in my life has had NO reaction to all of this. Neither positive or negative. When I asked what he thought about all of this, he kind of shrugged his shoulders and said, "Do you" and "I hope it's worth it". That was it. My surgery is scheduled for September 2nd, and he is still like, "Doo-dee-doo-dee-doh".🙄
