    Covid messed with my Pre-Op

I am being revised Band to Bypass and have been dreading the pre-op diet. I was 3 days out when all elective surgeries got cancelled due to Covid. I had followed the diet well and was rescheduled. Date of the reschedule was coming up, was on the shakes and doing ok, only slipped once... again 3-4 days out was re-reschudled due to Covid. I am due to go in tomorrow. I really struggled this time, Firstly I missed the start day for the shakes (I work in government and between drought, fires and Covid I barely know what day it is), then I got in my head and have only successfully managed to do 4-5 days VLCD. The VLCD I was given was: Brekky: shake, Lunch: shake or bar + Salad, Dinner: Shake + Veg. My diet has been Brekky: Shake or bar (if I remember), Dinner: Salad. Im just super worried about starting late. I was 123kg a week ago, 117kg ealier in the week and 120kg this morning (that time of the month due tomorrow for my op - Yay for me) ... I just needed to get that off my chest as it's really been stressing me out

Hi there! I’m 38 years old in Central California. Married to my absolute best friend with the most awesome little dudes (ages 4 and 2). I’ve battled with my weight my entire life. No joke, my mom put me on my first diet in the 3rd grade, which likely set off the years of self hatred and body shaming. About 6 years ago I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia (via endoscopy), and as of late it’s really gotten significantly worse. I just had another endoscopy on Tuesday and I am awaiting results. Anyhow, since my gastroenterologist suggested I might consider bariatric surgery, as that’s the only way they will repair the hiatal hernia at my current weight (304.6)...it’s all I can think about and am doing as much research as I can. I also signed up for an online seminar at the bariatric office at my local hospital. They do three surgeries at the hospital, lap band, sleeve, and gastric bypass. I’m leaning toward the sleeve, but honestly I just don’t know which is the best option (I don’t want to do lap band, just because I’ve read that it’s not as effective at losing weight). Anyhow, can you tell me a little about your experiences with sleeve or bypass. I only know two people that have had bariatric surgery, and they both have glowing reviews... But I know it’s not all sunshine and lollipops for everyone. Thanks in advance!

    EGD procedure

I've lost count of how many EGD's I've had done (probably close to 10 now) because I have EOS (eosinophilic esophagitis) so I usually get 1-3 of those a year (I'm overdue for my next one and, oh joy, I will have to get my throat stretched the next time I have one -_-"). The EGD's don't hurt. They give you something to put you out and the next thing you know, you're waking up in recovery and 10 minutes later they let you go home. You'll probably be a little dizzy from the meds they used to put you under so my advice is don't watch your feet lol. Also, depending on the meds, you might be nauseous afterward as well...

It’s normal to feel this way. I’m 27 days post op and 20 pounds down. Think of that.

    Too much water at once?

So happy I found this site. Tomorrow I will be one week post op from gastric sleeve and I started slow using the tiny cups to take small sips of water but then today on day 6 I noticed I was drinking a lot more, still smaller sips than usual but I’m almost positive it was more than the recommended 4oz an hour. Now I’m sitting here thinking there’s something wrong with my new stomach or maybe I somehow stretched it out. Is it ok to drink more water if you can tolerate it? Or will it stretch my stomach or harm me in some way?! Any insight would be awesome! Thanks in advance!

    Belly button?

I think some form of a yeast rash. I used an anti fungal cream and it corrected itself.

hunger pains, and cravings post op

I can only speak about sleeve, but it was normal. I had mad cravings for the first 10 days'ish & I'd "think" I was hungry when I really wasn't. I read somewhere that it is just your brain not correlating to your new stomach yet. Your mind and body has to adjust. Your brain still thinks you can eat whatever you want. Yes, it DEFINITELY goes away with time. Don't worry!

Do you see yourself as thin yet?

That was me, too. I always saw myself as overweight, but not really obese. Now when I look at old photos I am mortified at how fat I really was. Now it is hard to envision myself as anything but large. I went from a 24 jeans to a 10, and am very comfortable with that. I did save some old jeans and it is really pretty horrifying to think that I could now fit TWO of me into that pair! What has helped reframe my new size is looking at other people at work who wear the same sized scrubs as I do. I used to wear 2XX and now wear small. It has helped to see other people who wear smalls, also, to realize that my size is the same as theirs. It still seems surreal at times, but the small scrubs don't lie. I really am that size. This daily reinforcement has been a positive reality check for me.

This might be a little weird but crushed iced helped me. It didn't fill me up but it curved by hunger.

I felt like I was literally going to faint during the last week of full liquids, I added in a few pureed/soft foods in conjunction with the full liquids and immediately felt better. I don't want you to deviate from your plan, I shared this information to say that my body needed a little bit more at that point in my journey. I would also consult with your bariatric team to determine whether or not you are ready. Ariel (my stomach) loves refried beans and a scrambled egg. Not cooked together, in separate meals. Protein is our friend. The cream soups were delicious, but didn't givr me the substance and nutrients that I needed. I'm still drinking protein shakes, I only had my procedure on 3/3/20.
