    3 Year Sleeve Anniversary

WOW! I can't believe it's been 3 years since my Gastric Sleeve surgery! It feels like I had it yesterday. I started out at 470 and I've pretty much maintained at 215 pounds for the bulk of this year. If anyone is on the fence about having this surgery, let me tell you, it's life changing. I am so happy I did it. Not only is my health great, I've gotten very fit and am more active now than I have been in years.

    Reflux or nausea

It took me about a month to be able to sleep comfortably. It wasn't reflux or nausea, but a weird sensation that my guts were sloshing around. I'm a side sleeper by nature and every time I tried to sleep on my side, it felt like my guts were moving to the opposite side by gravity. It wasn't painful per se, but an uncomfortable pressure/pulling and it was disturbing. I could just envision the cartoon version of my innards lying placidly in a lump on the bottom side of my abdomen. I knew that wasn't true, but it FELT that way. I had to sleep on my back, which was foreign and uncomfortable. If what you're feeling isn't like I describe, it might very well be some reflux issues. It's common. Talk with your doc about what medications he recommends (you can usually get them over the counter) and follow general reflux protocol: do not eat a large meal within 3 hours of bedtime, avoid acidic or acid-producing foods, sleep with your head elevated.

I am just about 3 1/2 weeks post op from gastric bypass and I am struggling so hard with food cravings. I can’t think of anything besides how great food used to taste. I haven’t been able to act on any of my cravings, but it’s borderline obsession with thinking about food all the time. Any advice?

One week post op and very hungry

yes - that sounds about right. And no - you won't feel full or satisfied for awhile. For one thing, your nerves were cut, and it takes them awhile to heal. For another, liquids go right through you. Once you're a month or so out and start eating solid food, you'll feel your restriction. In the meantime, just follow your surgeon's plan.

    Weight loss and gain

I pretty hardcore disagree with this. Studies have show that those who lose weight and keep it off weigh themselves often, mostly daily. Also, with as little as we eat, I think its good to make daily changes and see how that affects our weight from day to day. But I understand your sentiment.

    Surgery coming up

I'm next week also. I think it's totally normal to be nervous, it IS a major change to your body and life. But try to think about the positive outcomes of going through with it and visit here often to get support and validation. It helps me immensely!

Modified DS (Loop) vs. Traditional DS

According to one surgeon, the term roux en y just means an incision. So any of the surgeries like DS, Loop DS and MGB all use roux en y incisions. But in bariatric circles, the RNY pertains to the regular GB. All I know about the MGB is that it can be revised and is less invasive. As is the case with all of us, my biggest concern was/is weight regain over time. I chose the Loop DS because it seemed to be more effective with weight loss than the GB and MGB and equally as effective as the tradition DS with one less incision and less intestinal bypass, diarrhea, etc. As far as the DS vs the Loop DS (SADI), I am concerned about weight regain because of the significant difference in the amount of longer intestinal tract that is left with the Loop DS. But I also have to take into consideration the side effects of having that much shorter intestinal tract with the malabsorption issue.
