    Over this preop diet

I am a week out from surgery and I started my pre-OP diet today. I get nothing but clear liquids and broth for the next 7 days. If I make it through this I can do anything.

Hi, I’m 4 years out and skipped my 3 year appointment because all off my labs to that point had been fine. I had labs in Sept and now my iron is low as well as D2 and B12. What a difference a few years makes so I would say it’s worth it to check in every year. I didn’t have any idea how bad my levels were.

Thanks, FC. I follow that thread and value it! I almost posted this there. 😀 I so appreciate the reminder of the metabolic nature of our disease and how surgery is the most effective treatment at the moment. I'm on board to move forward. You're right, inherent in my reluctance and second-guessing is probably decades of internalizing negativity and self-blame as well as society's cruel treatment of obesity. I'm hoping to move beyond blame and move towards something more productive and positive. Self-reliance based on learning from mistakes as well as learning new strategies from others. Above all, I'm going to surrender my lifetime of trying and failing (n=1 experimentation) and do some trusting of science and following the directions of my clinic to optimize my tool.

Hello all, Been a long time since I was here. Lots going on. on 20 Oct 2019 it will be 3 years since my RNY surgery. I have a checkup with my bariatric surgeon today. It is supposed to be every year, but since the emergency surgery last year it has been every six months. I have stopped going to support group (I think it is great but I am not getting anything out of it). I am still about 155 lbs and am pretty happy. Still have sugar issues, but everything else is ok (per blood tests). I get to go next month for the MRCP on my pancreas (I am hoping the IPMN hasn't grown). I flew from Detroit to Pharr, TX a couple of weeks ago to pick up a Mazda MX5 (my dad gave it to me, he can't drive it anymore), and drove it 1700 miles back to Detroit. Then a little over a week later my wife's brother was killed in an automobile accident. I drove about 500 miles (from Detroit to Carthage, NY) last Thursday (so I could be at his service) and got up the next morning and drove about 500 miles back to Detroit. Not really feeling it anymore, this is probably going to be my last time seeing my surgeon. I don't need to pay him $40 to have him tell me I am doing fine. I know how I am doing. I hope everyone is doing well.

Well, the doctor is happy that I lost the weight (I had gained about 15 pounds) and has put me back on the yearly check. My primary doctor does bloodwork and checks everything every time I go to see him. I guess I will stick with my surgeon still, he is a great surgeon and I respect the mans talents. As far as the support group, I think I am done. It was great while I was active in it, but it just repeats every year. We have a plastic surgeon come in one meeting, the program head shrinker another, the vitamin people another, a holiday party in December, and pretty much talk about the same things at the other meetings. Plus there is only me and one other guy in the group, the rest are females, so everything is geared towards them. I get it. But I am not getting anything out of it.

Trying again/My Story: PreOP Diet #2

I'm now on day 3 of my preop diet plan which is for 14 days. My surgery is Oct 28. i am to have 4 Optifast shakes a day. I can have unlimited sugar free jello and popsicles, broths, decaf coffee/tea with only sugar substitute (no creamer), sugar free sports drinks and of course water. I have been staying on track thus far. I haven't cheated at all. There's a light at the end of the tunnel. I know after a day or so once I'm in ketosis I'm supposed to feel much better overall and less hungry. Today I'm just tired, mild headache, achy all over, and hungry. I was off of work today. I survived Mon and Tues Days 1&2 of the diet while at work. I didn't take my breaks in the break room, I went elsewhere to drink my shakes and eat jello. I sipped on broth like it was coffee. (LOL). I started Monday at 237 and weighted 233 today! Need to be 231 or under when I weigh in at my dietician appt which is Oct 25. Good luck to you all on your journeys!

    Weight loss

Everyone's different, but I lost 24lbs in the first month. After that I averaged 3lbs a week, now that I'm almost 5 months out I'm at 2lbs per week which I know I could do better if I was a bit more active. I think in the end you get the results you work for. I signed up for my first half marathon in the spring so hopefully training for that will help me get to my goal and then some 😊
