You probably didn't do a lot of damage to your weight loss, but the reason for no alcohol is to prevent tissue damage to the surgical sites. Alcohol can cause erosions and ulcerations - even years later. I know everyone makes their own decisions, but personally, I think it is best to avoid alcohol forever after WLS. I am a GI nurse and the worst ulcers I have ever seen are in WLS patients who started drinking again. It is pretty horrible. These tissues seem to remain fragile forever, and we need to do all we can to take care of them. I gave up sugar because I don't want dumping. I gave up coffee and alcohol because I don't want ulcers. Gave up soda, as I already had fatty liver disease, and soda contributes to it (diet as well as regular.) Gave up simple carbs because I don't want to be fat! BUT...... got a whole new life that is so precious and worth taking care of.

This is not an easy journey you still have to do the right foods, exercise , and make proper choices. You should join a support group to keep you positive. Family is family if they have been doing this for years it's gonna take time for them to change. You just don't have to tolerate it. Your stronger and realizing their words are hurtful. Just say to them when they start being negative you are going to leave or hang up. You are changing your life to be better not to keep getting knocked down. After the 100th time maybe they will realize they are not being nice. Sorry for all the stress......

I'm going to have to agree with ANewStart4Me on this. While your family seems much more extreme than mine, that is one of the primary reasons I didn't tell my family about my surgery. To this day, none of them know. When I realized that my outlook on life and their approach were different, I started keeping them at arm's length. The only person you can change is you, so you need to adapt to them in the best way that works for YOU. I also recommend that you consider formal counseling. We're here to vent and give our "Dear Abby" versions of advice, but formal counseling might help you to work through this and develop some good coping mechanisms.

Hi, I suggest opening up to your family and tell them how they are making you feel. It's your life and you are the one who has to live it. You are old enough to make your own decisions. If they cannot be happy for you and only bring negativity into your life you then you should pull away and do what's best for YOU and your family. I'm sorry you are going through this. Oh thank you SO much for saying this!!! I meant to bring up this point in my preaching above!!! That there are SOOOO many in the IF thread who have walked the walk for months now!!! Any one of us will be happy to help. And that the best thing is to jump into the thread, and start posting and asking questions!!! We'll all be thrilled to help! Not singling anyone out, but especially peeps like @GreenTealael, @sillykitty, @matt, @sheribear68, @AZHiker (don't know why these aren't highlighting) and so many others!!

All good responses above. I had the same reaction after visiting some bariatric forums. It’s normal to worry and stress over surgery procedures. There are risks with ANY type of surgery. Talk to your surgeon about the statistics for complications. Know that your team will take good care of you. Your pain will be managed with medication. I’m five years out. No complications.
