To Sea or not to Sea

I hear ya, I often lament the state of my upper arms. But you know what helps? Tighter clothes. Keeps everything in nicely. Leggings and fitted tops are my new best friends. As far as swim suits go, I plan on wearing some skin tight rash guards come vacation time this summer...

    GETTING SURGERY AUGUST 19th!!

FINALLY of 4 months having two bumps in the road preventing me to get approved to finally getting the call Thursday from my surgeons office telling me to call them back to schedule surgery and my insurance approved me! They first gave me the date of July 8 but I had to get an AUGUST date due to work schedule for the next 2 months! I been in the process since Dec. 5 (consult day) I am so excited, after I got the call i called my mom, sister, and grandparents with the news with tears in my eyes. All day that day I was so emotional wanting to scream to cry of happiness. I can not wait for my new journey in getting healthy. Family have asked me if I’m excited and scared. All I’ve told them is both but that I am not trying to think of the scary things. .... just wanted to share with all of you

Our general goal was to sip an ounce (30ml) every five minutes if you can. Inflammation in the stomach after surgery can vary widely, so some can drink fairly normally (no guzzling or chugging!) while others may have to sip very slowly, I could sip down a bowl of broth (6-8 oz?) and a 4 oz juice box in a half hour sitting in the hospital, and that was of no concern to the doc; when my wife went through this a few years before things went through much more slowly. Both can be considered to be "normal".

    An Uncomfortable Question

Sex is sooooo much better when I'm thinner. And even with looser skin, I am waaaay hotter than when I was obese. And not just because I am thinner, but because I am more CONFIDENT and sure of myself, and the weight loss was a big part in re-cultivating that. You are really worried about how you will feel/look after weight loss (I notice this is your second post on the topic ♥️). But are you happy with your situation right now? I'm guessing that you aren't since you are moving forward with the surgery. Change is scary. But if you put in the effort, it will totally be worth it. 100%. ♥️

Who the heck is this woman?

So... A little back information is required for this story. I’m a hairdresser (36 yrs) but first I’m a wife and mom , a great friend and up until just a few months ago a caregiver for my dad (he passed just recently) I have always been a giving person ( total pushover) NEVER put myself first and have had tremendous stress trying to get my child with autism the help he needs .. all this I ATE over, and ate and ate.. it was ma thang. I was always running around taking care of all and losing track of me along the way.. this past February 4th I had gastric by pass and I am changing so much I can’t believe it.. my self esteem is great and I am becoming the woman I have dreamed about becoming for DECADES.. this to the displeasure of a few folks who I have been there for even at the sacrifice of my own health and well being..well, their pushing back, disgruntled and perplexed as to why I will no longer cater to them and I’ve had some heated debates and tears from those who were used to having me at their beck and call.. the amazing thing is I have no guilt in putting myself first but the peanut gallery has a LOT to say about it... just this week I have been asked " Who is this new woman” it will require such changes to these friendships that it might mean walking away and choosing my self for a change.. I’m really excited and I can’t believe the freedom that comes with releasing that guilt that made me be so self destructive.. I’m not the woman I was months ago... and I’m darn glad!!!

Are you sure you want to do this?

I probably wouldn;t have said much as I avoid confrontation like the plague - but would have felt plenty. Was she a nurse affiliated with your surgeon's office, or does she work in the bariatric ward at the hospital? I'm hoping that maybe she was a general ward nurse and just really doesn't get it. Patients lose weight on the pre-op diet because they have a clear goal in sight, and know that it is very short term. It is rather idiotic to be surprised at someone who has lost weight on an extremely low calorie diet. Duh. But it could not be sustained in any viable or healthy way. I was considered low BMI for this surgery too - I just about squeaked through qualification with my co-morbidities. Yes, I did get people who were surprised at what I was doing and told me that I didn't need it. Oh, but I really did. 20 years of health problems that started as low-key but became harder to ignore with every passing year dictated that I do this now, or do it later when I am even heavier and more at risk. It really isn't up to a nurse to be gossipy and nosy about your health situation and the private battles you have fought. Hugs to you.

Aside from telling her that it was none of her business...I may have said that WLS is a last resort option, and if I had have been able to lose weight and successfully maintained the weight loss without WLS I wouldn't be here. The nurse has no right to ask such questions, I would inform the hospital of the unprofessionalism of the nurse. She shouldn't be second guessing patients or their doctors.
