Medical professionals : why do you do the work you do? Why did choose to work with Bariatric patients? OMGOSH, the responses have been amazing. From family and personal experiences you learn so much. I met nurse, who attended an Ivy League school, who has been practicing for two years and loves work with people. On two occasions, she grew her hair and donated the hair to organizations that make wigs for children. So, I challenge you in the midst of your discomfort, to focus on people around you - so they see understand that Bariatric patients are individuals who want to live, love, dance in the rain, and focusing on this experience to share with others. Man, could we focus on the bad things but I am focusing on the great things awaiting me on the other side! Thank you Lord!

    I'm a bad loser

Starting week 7 post op. I can start with normal foods. Yay! But I still have trouble getting more than 3oz in. Boo! I weigh myself on Sundays and the weight loss is frustraaaatingly slow. There was one week where I lost 2 lbs. But all the others I lose less than a lb per week. Is this normal? How can this be when I'm basically starving (on average 500 cals a day)? I'm worried that if I ever get to the 1000-1200 cals per day I'll stop losing weight or start gaining again! And I still have like 50lbs to go to reach my goal. I'm afraid I'll never get there.

One 2-legged Tomkitten, 2 4-pawed girls named SQUEAKY and CASSIE. They make my life beautiful at the most, a madhouse at the least. But I admit it, I am pussycat-whipped, Squeaky,is peeved at me, I didn't go to Wal-Mart and buy her Kitty Crack (Temptation Cat Treats) I swear she let out a sigh when I said she has plenty kinds of Friskies sitting in her food bowl, No romance, No joy, Its just Blah and she feels she deserves better.

    Is This Sleep Apnea?

Sounds like you might have it. Medscape says: in general, the physical examination is normal in patients with OSA, aside from the presence of obesity (body mass index: >30 kg/m2), an enlarged neck circumference (men: >43 cm [17 in]; women: >37 cm [15 in]), and hypertension. I was diagnosed with apnea but couldn’t tolerate the CPAP. Now that I am down 75 pounds, I am hoping that it is gone. I certainly have more energy. Best of luck!

I was blessed to have a recovery room nurse that shared her before/after WLS photos with me, she'd lost 109 pounds and she kept me preoccupied from feeling nauseous and sick while recovering from the surgery.

    Self esteem

I can tell you I have more self-esteem now at 240lbs than I did at 140. I was skinny and fit and had a 6-pack and HATED my body. I thought I was the most disgusting thing to walk this earth. Becoming fat was in a twisted way a blessing because I learned to love me for ME and not for how I looked. I was vain and self-absorbed and would pick at every invisible fat roll when I was skinny. Self-esteem should never be connected to the way you look. The only reason it is for some people, I think, is because society says it's "bad and wrong" to be overweight. Well, as a former skinny person... if you don't love yourself, you won't love your body no matter how it looks. Now I hope to lose the weight so my inner confidence matches my outward appearance.

    Headaches

Post-op day 11 Roux en Y for failed Nissen x2 and continued severe reflux. I am having no reflux and no issues with the actual procedure, but headaches I am having. I am making sure to follow the diet and taking in plenty of water and protein. Prior to surgery, I was a newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic and I have fibromyalgia. I take gabapentin liquid (yuk), Lyrica and Cymbalta. They want everything sugar-free, but I am wondering if maybe I am not getting enough sugar or carbs. I have gone from 194 pounds to 182 pounds.
