    Bariatric and Alcoholism....

I do think transference of addictions is a legitimate thing. Addiction issues usually aren’t limited to just one thing. You see people quit smoking and develop gambling or food addictions. It happens all the time. It is super common for post ops to develop alcohol dependencies. As someone who previously went through some dependency issues, I’m incredibly aware and sensitive to being at an increased risk. I think the worst thing people can do is think it can’t happen to them. If you don’t think you’re susceptible to addiction transference, then you’re less likely to recognize the signs.

    Band Removal Advice

Hi. Thank you for replying. I'm sorry to hear about the pain you had to endure. But I'm glad you're ok now. I gained about 40lbs back. So my plan is to have it removed. I just hope that the surgeons grant me this change sooner than later.

    Worried About Hair Loss?

I just wanted to emphasize this point. Once hair loss start, it is hair that went into the "sleep" cycle, sometime back, most likely around the time of WLS. Once the folicle "wakes up", it pushes the old hair out, and that's your hair loss. Most of the time hair loss doesn't begin until 2-3 months out from surgery. I also wanted to note that you could be doing everything right, hitting your protein, taking biotin from the beginning and still have hair loss. I think there is some genetics or luck involved as well.

    Weigh-in

I went through the same. Initial BMI was 41. I was told don’t gain anything, but don’t lose either. It was very stressful. I have Blue Cross Blue Shield in NY. I lost a few lbs but not too much. It took forever for them to approve me but they did. That little bit of weight loss showed I was trying. It’s better than gaining!

    Keto

True Keto is very high fat (like >70 grams), moderate carb (30-45 grams) and very low carb (<20) a day. I am 4 years out and have been Keto for a while. My surgeon and docs are all for it, I used this to conquer some regain and also to resolve a health issue. It is quite different from a 'bariatric' diet. I don't drink milk or eat yogurt anymore, I follow the rules of keto, I eat my macros calculated out for me. They change as my weight goes down. I also incorporate Intermittent Fasting which also has made a huge difference. I will probably eat this way forever. There are tons of resources out there, especially on youtube and there are substitutes for EVERYTHING, but I try to stick to a very basic food list.

    8 months after surgery

I am in the same boat. I have actually gained 15-20 pounds by grazing and making bad choices. I am trying to get it under control but once you slip it gets easier and easier to make poor choices.
