    Purée do’s and dont’s

Maybe try soft scrambled eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, refried beans. All are recommended during my upcoming puree phase. Good luck!

Made the choice in 06. Not many other options available then. Also wanted least invasive and adjustable and removable so lap band fit my prerequisite. Slight hair loss at 4-5 months. It did grow right back. I have a hard time with very dry chicken and salads don’t like me sometimes. I knew when I lost weight steadily and it did NOT COME BACK!! That this was the right choice for me. My tools are: this board to and ask things and check in, Drs appts scheduled and kept, sharing a personal trainer 2x weekly, and also going back to shakes when my band acts up. It is the best I can do and I try everyday.... some days or weeks are better than others! Nothing in this life is perfect! Lastly, it is usually the same 5-10 lbs I deal with.... Not 85 lbs!!. Best of luck with your WLS decision.Pick what the Dr and you agree on..

    Questions before surgery

I had a catheter during surgery, but they removed it before I was awake. My hospital got me up pretty quickly after I came to, so I would just use the restroom. This may vary depending on this like the type of surgery, the hospital, your age, mobility, etc. I am 34, had RNY, and no mobility issues going into surgery... so they got me out of bed pretty quickly. I’m a nerd and read through my surgical notes. General anesthesia does not numb your stomach. However, they did inject local anesthetic near each incision site at the end of the surgery. Post surgery you will be on some sort of pain medication. My incisions never hurt. My abdominal muscles did, though. I would describe it as quite a bit of soreness the first few days, but it is tolerable and there are pain medications if it isn’t tolerable to you.

    Back to Work

I think it in part depends what age level you work with. I’m a teacher too - middle and high school social studies. When I’ve subbed as elementary I feel like it can be more moving around/bending/performing and you never know when an overeager hug will hit you right in the incisions...I think I would have been fine two weeks out, just really exhausted/low energy in the afternoon. I think it’d be really hard to miss the first few days of school, and I’d say be there for the first few days even if you need to take the Thursday Friday off that week to rest up after it. But as others have said everyone’s timeline is different!! Good luck!!!

    Questions before surgery

General anesthesia does not numb your abdomen, it puts you to sleep so they can do the surgery. I had a catheter the first night after my surgery that was removed the following morning. If you do not, you will get up and use the bathroom. You may be moving slower, it may be a bit uncomfortable, but you will be able to move and walk about and will be encouraged to do so.

This is called the slimies or foamies. It means you ate too much or too fast. It's normal, but definitely something you'd prefer to avoid.

    I’m terrible at this!

We can't motivate you for you. That's where YOU have to take the ball and run with it. Big thing is to not beat yourself up for the mis-steps. They happen, it's what you chose to do next that matters. Missing going to the gym? Well, GO! Stop making excuses and go. Not following your diet? Well, Stop it! Start following your diet and stop making excuses. Push yourself! No one else is going to make you feel horrible because you ate crap and aren't doing what you know you are supposed to do. No one else is going to look back at you in the mirror and be disappointed because you didn't do what you knew you should have. Just do it. You know you have to, You know why you have to, The ONLY way to get past feeling the way you do... is to do what you know you are supposed to. So stop dwelling on the crap that happened yesterday, focus on what you need to do to be successful TODAY.
