    Three Month Post Op Check-In

Hello all, Well today is my three month post op check up with my surgeon. I am down 62 pounds since my journey started in December 2017. My surgery was on May 16th, 2018 so since my surgery date I have lost 36 pounds. I did hit a bit of a stall for a week but I just tried to ignore it and keep on keepin on.

Palomabella... Go for it! I'm 69 and 1 month post op. I have felt better ever since I awoke post op. For me it was lifesaving surgery. 50/50 odds. For me there was no choice. I tried to have the surgery in 2016, March 7 to be exact. I sought our the best surgery group in my state. I went into surgery at 7:00 am. I awoke in the OR suite at 7:45 am. I knew immediately something went wrong. I was very alert. I asked what went wrong? A few hours later my doctor came to recovery and told me my liver was too bad to proceed with the surgery. He did a biopsy and closed my 4 incisions. It was devastating. Turns out the cure for a bad liver is weight loss. That's a catch 22. So 2years forward and my health has continued its downward spiral. I knew I would not be around for my 70th birthday. I went for a consultation with a local surgeon new to our area. I took the photo of my liver and accompanying data. He said it could be done. After many, many tests. My day finally arrived. July 16. I felt so much better immediately. When I awoke I felt as if all the rotten and diseased stuff in my body left with my miserable stomach. I had NO Pain other than 3 gas pains and NO nausea. The only discomfort since is when I eat or drink more than 4-5 ozs. My highest weight was 373. That was some time before pre op. I lost about 10# off that quickly. At this time, 1 month and a day post op I am down 62# this morning I weighed 311#. I'm sleeping better, walking better, alert during the day. I put my own shoes on this morning.. Go for it! It's all good.. It only gets better from here.

Ever since I can remember, I have been the "fat guy". That is what I was known for. I never took my shirt off at a pool or a beach, ever! That is something I want to change though. So, my best friend who I graduated high school together has always been much slimmer, popular, girls flocked to him; I sure you get the drift. Although we have been friends for over two decades I feel he never took me seriously because of my weight. At parties, clubs, bars, social situations I was always the one who was ignored and not payed attention too. Well, he moved out of state and we see each other about twice a year. He has a very stressful job and as a result has been emotionally eating and gained a significant amount of weight. He is one of the few that know that I had my surgery and he is very supportive. We saw each other for the first time in over a year last week and guess what...drum roll.....I weigh less than him. He even made a comment on how I was flirting with the waitress at the restaurant we met at. It felt like I was in his shoes for once. It felt truly that the tables have turned.

Yes, i had this too. Yesterday was my first full day at home after my bypass. Ive noticed its better already. First couple of days felt like I was in a half dream, half awake state anytime i tried to sleep. Propping myself up, doing the walks and taking deep breaths regularly helped it improve quickly. Slept 4 hours straight last night, awake for an hour than 3 more. It gets better fast!

    Scar Removal

Not using anything specifically for scar treatment but I did put neosporin on my scars two days last week to see if it would help them heal. Mine scabbed like normal but then the scabs came off one by one either because of water from the shower or when I dried myself afterwords. They have shrunk but not completely healed yet. Glue has also come off so they are now open on the surface and I can feel and see the stitches on two of them.

If you cannot incorporate another protein shake, why don't you try something whole grained? It will definitely go down a little better, and you are increasing your calorie intake. For example, you can have two slices of Ezekiel bread with natural peanut butter. That is about 255 calories of whole grains and healthy fats that will fill you up and provide you with more calories

    I Can Run

Guys... (and Gals!)... I can run. Like one of those fit people you see running on the side of the road. Except the fit part of course. But still I’m RUNNING. It’s been years. I knew I missed running, but the absolute feeling of accomplishment I have is insane! Now admittedly I can’t do it for very long, but I’m okay with that! Today I ran 2.12 miles in 30 minutes. Not impressive to normal joggers but for me that’s AMAZING. I am having a very proud NSV and I hope everyone else is having a good night!

There are two unflavored protein powders that I really like. The Bariatricpal Protein One and Genepro work really well for me primarily because they blend in quickly and easily. There is definitely a flavor which I ususally mask easily in a soup or broth. But the BEST way to mask the flavor in my limited experience is to mix the protein powder with water in the blender, then add ice, your sweetener of choice and then 1/2 of a Kool Aid packet (the tiny packets that you would usually mix with sugar) They taste just like a Kool Aid slushy! For a slightly different consistency, I've even added a couple tablespoons of sugar free Jello powder instead of Kool Aid and sweetener. My husband blended up a couple of these ahead of time and tossed them in the freezer - those are fantastic after a nice outdoor swim in this heat!

    Centrum and vitamins. Show me

My daughter is Celiac, she is 9 now but was diagnosed when she was 2. I've never had any doctors tell me that she needs to be taking vitamins! Can you educate me about this a bit so I can get her what she needs?
