Do you know the phrase, "With friends like that, who needs enemies?" Anyway, yes, there can always be complications with surgery. On the other hand, these are statistically safe surgeries with low rates of complications. You face much greater health risks by remaining obese. As far as keeping it off long-term, you have a much better chance with surgery than just doing it on your own, where the success rate is dismal (something like 5 percent, I think). The surgery isn't magic, it just gives you a fighting chance to lose a significant amount of weight AND time to change your eating habits for long-term success. Good luck!

    Pizza!

So I made pizza for dinner and sadly couldn’t eat much (yay!). It is a turkey fest! 1 slice of turkey bacon, 6 slices of turkey pepperoni and 1.5 ounces of ground turkey. 1.5 ounces of cheese, 2 tablespoons of sauce, few mushrooms on a cauliflower crust. 4-5 servings. [emoji3] Protein goals met! Yep!

For many years I gained weight strictly due to being lazy and eating poorly. But for the last several years, I have been driving myself crazy because I feel like I have been doing everything I should be doing in terms of eating the right foods (Whole30 and Paleo) and exercising intensely (Obstacle Course Racing and Weight Training) and nothing worked for weight loss. I have often felt like my body and brain were working against my heart and preventing me from achieving what I wanted. In my ongoing research, I recently found another Bariatric Surgeon that post his bariatric videos on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/DrMatthewWeiner I found his Informational Seminar video to be much more informative than any other I attended during my search for a local surgeon. One point in particular is the slide I've attached to this post. The stats he shows in this slide are my exact stats. His explanation here is that to gain 100lbs over a 20-year period, a woman only has to eat an average of 50 additional calories per day. Which is basically nothing. This takes into consideration pregnancy weight gain, weight loss, and weight regain over this time period. He affirms that significant weight gain from such a low number of additional calories means that there is actually something else going on besides just eating more calories than you burn. And as many of us suspect, it is due to hormonal and metabolic changes because of both age and changes that occur from diets you go on. This alone lifted a huge weight off my shoulders. Because I am not crazy after all, my brain and body were working against me. And surgery can help me get back to where I want to be. It further confirms my decision to have this surgery and use it merely as one tool in my arsenal to regain my health! I wanted to share this for anyone else has felt like they were crazy and wondered endlessly why diet and exercised worked from everyone else but you...

    No Energy, Pre Op Diet

Thank you so much AshAsh1. That is a great way to look at this. I'm on day 13 right now and it is almost over. I honestly believe what you said. After surgery the liquid diet is going to be pretty normal still. The only difference is I will be able to add creamy liquids. That will be a nice reprieve and a step up. Hard to say but giving myself something to look forward to like creamy liquids, really changes my perspective on things. I guess we are starting from the bottom moving up. I much rather have the head hunger and crying now than have those urges after the surgery when I'd be at more of a risk. Thank you for this pick-me-up. It was exactly what I needed! Plus if we can make it through this we can pretty much make it through most anything.

Hey Glamgirl! This is my first post since surgery on April 18th and I feel like I got run over by a truck. I hope that's normal! I'm exhausted and getting enough liquids is a challenge for sure, especially since I have the dreaded "D" (diarrhea). I'm so glad to hear that you are doing well! I keep telling myself it will get better!! Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

Wow, sorry you're having such a rough time. Transitioning from one food stage to the next is on an "as tolerated" basis. Your stomach may still be too swollen to handle the pureed foods. That's not a mistake you're making, it's just your individual situation. So long as you get adequate liquids and protein, don't worry if you transition more slowly than others. And if you can only handle 1/2 a tablespoon, so be it. It's so hard not to compare yourself to others, but you're unique! Comparisons aren't "real". When you read various people's stories, you realize that there's no consensus even among doctors as to an "ideal" time to transition, either. Some doctors are very conservative, others push faster. In the end, it all comes down to what you can handle. Be kind to yourself. You've done some really mean stuff to your insides, and they just need time to adjust.

    Back at the Gym!

A bit of inspiration for the gym tomorrow! I have this printed and posted on my wall. Every time I think about skipping the gym I look at this and decide to suck it up and go even if it’s just for 20 minutes. I find that once I’m there it’s easier to get through it and find the motivation!
