One step forward, two steps back

So, I'm sitting in the ER while typing this because I apparently wasn't getting enough fluids and wound up with pretty bad dehydration. I woke up feeling extremely nauseated with a terrible headache (basically like I had an awful hangover) and when I tried to sip my Vitamin Water Zero, I couldn't keep it down. (This is the first time I've had trouble with vomiting since the bad reaction I had to the anaesthesia.) I called my surgeon and talked to his PA, who asked me to come in. So I went into the surgeon's office (which is just a block from the hospital) and after she examined me she asked me to go to the ER for fluids and labs. The labs came back and confirmed that my electrolytes were all over the place and something called my "anion gap" was too wide (like the rest of me - haha!) which apparently signifies extreme dehydration. I've gotten 2 IVs of fluids plus a banana bag and two different anti-nausea medications and am feeling loads better, so hoping they send me home soon!! Pretty annoyed with myself that I let this happen, though - I knew I wasn't getting enough fluids but because it's been so uncomfortable I just let it go and assumed I would be fine. Clearly I am not a doctor. Let this be a warning to everyone - drink your fluids, especially during your first few weeks! It's more important than hitting the protein and calories. I'm proof.

    What a surprise!

Hello all, Eight days until my bypass and I just came back from an appointment that totally surprised me! It was with a clinical pharmacist who was explaining how to give myself the blood thinner shots for 10 days after the surgery. I'm not too squeamish about these kinds of things, but I was surprised this wasn't mentioned in any of the classes, appointments, handouts, or other information I've been getting since January. What will also be a surprise is how much the prescription is going to cost me. I'm waiting to hear back from insurance, but it could be a lot. Any experience or thought about this!! Having to give myself a daily shot in the stomach for 10 days seems like adding insult to injury...I'm just saying...

    ...two more days!

Me too...the closer I get the more nervous - which is probably normal. The old me is looking for excuses, I am not giving any. Good luck Monday- I am sure we will both rock this...

    Nerves only thing stopping me

Thanks for your response. That is very true what you said about not understanding if you weren't feeling nervous.

    On the way

HI all. I had my sleeve surgery on 30 March 2017 at Gisborne Hospital in New Zealand. I was 178.6 (393.7 Pounds) at my heaviest in November 2016. Weighed 156.4 (344.8 pounds)on the day of my surgery and now weigh 117.5 kg (259 pounds). It has not been easy at times but I am now walking between 75 kilometres (46 miles) and 100 kilometres (62 miles) a week with my dog (who has also lost 2.5 kgs!). I am going all the way and will never go back. I know that I will have hard times ahead but have really mind shifted the way I look at food. Smart protein is everything at the moment for all meals. I admire each and everyone of you who have had or are considering this journey - Kia Kaha! This is a Maori phrase from New Zealand meaning "be strong". Let us try our very best and not be too hard on ourselves.
