    Severe back pains!

Are the back pains on both sides of your back or just one? I ask because a kidney infection (which can happen when you're dehydrated and most of us are in the beginning because it can be hard to get all our fluids in) can cause lower back or "flank" pain and usually occurs on one side depending on which kidney is affected. Are the pains accompanied by muscle spasms by any chance? If you're walking hunched over because of drains or incisions, sometimes that's enough to irritate your back. No matter what, I'd definitely recommend you call your surgeon and let them know what you're experiencing. They'll be able to guide you better than we can.

    Dr. Simon Chow in Quebec?

Hi there, I'm thinking of booking my gastric bypass with Dr. Simon Chow, who is basically a protege of Dr. Nicholas Christou in Montreal, Quebec Canada. Their offices are at the Physimed centre, but they operate in a private hospital. So far they seem very transparent and helpful, I've already had a consultation with Dr. Chow and he seems encouraging and supportive. I guess I was just looking to see if anyone else had experience with Dr. Chow or even Dr. Christou in terms of how their surgery went, and what they experienced after in terms of support. Thanks!

    Worried About Wife

I think you have a right to be worried. It sounds like she is developing some very dangerous habits. Try to get her family doctor involved. She should go in for a checkup that includes a urine test (to check for dehydration), as well as bloodwork that tests for vitamin deficiencies. If the doctor finds things wrong, then it is medical advice she is exposed to, rather than a nagging husband I'm 3 months postop, and eat/drink ALL THE TIME.. and my bloodwork just came back . Deficient in vit. D and A. A!!!! You know.. carrots! Craziness. You did right, looking around for help. [Pat on the back]..

    Help

You're lucky... it took me 11 days! Your body is just getting rid of all the junk. I wouldn't be too concerned unless it's dark black or bloody. If you're really concerned, give your surgeons office a call.

    Carbs

I just keep my carbs below 50 grams and keep my protein at 70 grams. Not sure if that's right but its working

I know everyone is different, I was just looking for some tips in case I happen to have the same situation as all. The 2 week pre op liquid diet is hard but today is better than yesterday. It's getting easier. Thank you for the replies! And I will definitely have a wheelchair ready as per my surgeon as we leave 5 days after surgery.

    NSV happy!!!

Look at us, we ROCK! Thanks so much everyone. It's so good to support each other. Last time I lost significant weight it was 40lbs on WW program. I barely paid attention to my body and relationships with food. This time around I'm planning to stay "present" and enjoy/celebrate every milestone while learning new habits.

This should be covered as a post op procedure. I had a complication after surgery once and it was covered as post op. Call your doctor and don't worry. He will fix it.

    Tips for Meals

We had surgery around the same time. I relied on refried beans with a bit of shredded parm on top. That was a staple until I could tolerate more dense foods. Little by little, one food at a time. Also ate cottage cheese regularly. Still do. I find that in the morning I still can't stomach anything too solid, so usually have yogurt (plain Greek) or cottage cheese. Later on, you can add some peach or pear to those. Learning new proper portion sizes takes time. You are on the right track using smaller dishes and utensils. I have to measure everything because I have no sense of what 3-4 ounces of food looks like. I can usually eat about 3 ounces at a time. Like you, I was raised to believe that wasting food is a sin. I try very hard to make only what I can eat. It does get easier.

I take Centrum Silver chewables (or the CVS equivalent, which goes on sale all the time). for protein, you're bound to get 100 different answers on this because people's tastes are so different. I like most of the Unjury and Syntrax powders. Your best bet is to get a bunch of samples (even if you have to pay for them, which you usually do) and start trying them *after* surgery. That way you won't get stuck with a $40 tub of something you hate.
