    liver shrinking diet

on this forum i have read many many posts from people that said that the two week pre-surgery diet is not a "liver shrinking diet". it is just the surgeons way to get you used to following a liquid diet. some people even said they didn't follow it and advised others that it wasn't a big deal if they didn't follow it. last night the dietician told us that yesterday she saw our surgeon and he was very upset. she said he just had a tough surgery where the patient did not follow the diet at all and they had so much trouble maneuvering around his liver and trying with difficulty to retract the liver to successfully complete the surgery. the patient's liver was hanging down too far to retract it. it took longer than it should and finally they were able to complete the surgery. she told us that the liver shrinking diet does reduce the amount of fat around the liver and around your stomach and is an imporant part of this process especially if you have a high BMI or a fatty liver. just thought i would share that story.

When you next see your dietition tell her your concerns and expectations. If you are not satisified with her response ... get a new dietition.

Sounds like you are getting some good advice on here - i would just add - please do not get your hopes too high for the first fill. I have had 4 fills (7.5 cc total) in a 14 cc band and i'm still not restricted. I am only just now feeling "something" in there. But i know i'm not in the green zone and i can still (but usually don't) eat too much food. I'm hopeful that my 5th fill on Dec. 6 does the trick. All of this is to say - i hope this is not the case for you - but you may find that you do not feel "different" at only the first fill (or for a few fills after). This is bandster hell and it is the worst time for a bandster - heeled up - can eat anything - and not to the green zone yet. BEST OF LUCK TO ALL OF US ON OUR JOURNEYS!!!

I have 10cc in a 14cc band. Took quite a while to get there, but I actually think I need a slight adjustment, and I mean slight. My last fill was 5 months ago and he put in 1.5cc and I couldn't get down Water. He took 1/2cc out and I have been golden since. However, I think I may need a slight tiny adjustment to get me JUST right. I will talk it over at my next appointment. But, saying all that, I need to say this... BE PATIENT! The band is a tool not a miracle. You made the choice to have the surgery, now be patient with the process. Good luck, everyone!

Hmmm I'll ask him about plication as well. My sister is getting the sleeve and my mom is worried about her cutting part of her stomach out. Maybe plication could be the solution. Does he know if it is reversible? My sister found out about. Dr.V. She was referred to him. I'm not sure from whom. I originally was gonna go to a different doctor but after she told me how good he was, I agreed to go to him. He's doing both our surgeries back to back. I'm so excited for her more than myself. She's a size 26 and such a beautiful person inside and out and I know that the surgery will make her so happy. Dr. V is very realistic and isn't out to make money. He didn't want to do the sleeve on me because he said I was too young and that the lap band would serve as a boost to me losing weight. And that in about 5 years he wants to remove it. I'm just dreading the adjustments. Every 5 weeks!? Lol but hey I'm ready to start my new life so I'm not complaining.

    November Bandsters!!!

I had my lapband surgery Nov 7th and my tummy is a little sore, Today is the first day I've really started to feel better. I had no desire for food or anything, I was forcing the fluids down- this afternoon I noticed the swelling must be down because I'm starting to feel hungry for the first time tonite. Trying to keep my mind off it and had broth and then some sugar free jello. I am so excited and soooo happy I did this.

    November Bandsters!!!

Banded on the 8th - sore, swollen and tired - sleeping on and off since Tuesday afternoon. But Happy too. Have to force myself to take in my water and protein - have no desire for it except for the knowledge that it is crucial for recovery. Fabulous doctors and hospital staff - can't say enough wonderful things about them. Glad I was there overnight. More later . . . .

    liver shrinking diet

My surgeon is putting me 2 weeks of Opti Fast. He explained it was necessary for a few reasons. He said it does shrink the liver and going in, he wants to in and out of surgery as quick as possible. He said the less a patient is on anesthesia, the better the healing and outcome and chance of anything negative occuring. As much as I am DREADING a 2 week liquid fast, I will use it to lose weight and get a headstart and go in with a clean slate. I am also a bit fortunate that the 2 week fast will come right after New Years. So I am sure by then, I will be ready to start the new year fresh and get rid of all the holiday food gluttony!!

You probably don't have a fill yet! There is little to no restriction prior to a fill. your tummy was swollen which is why you initially had restriction, now that it has gone down, you are back to pre-surgery tummy. Take this time prior to your first fill to heal, not worry about weight loss. Follow your doctor's orders, your tummy is not stretched.
