To Hell with the pre-op liquid diet

Of all things my Dr. decided to put me on a liquid Optifast diet for 2 weeks. I can only consume 800 calories a day which must be all liquids. i can have an Optifast shake, suger-free jello, water, flavored water, calorie-free non carbonated drinks.

 

Now if i could actually stick to this diet then i wouldn't need to be banded. had to remind the dr. that the reason i was getting banded was because i had an eating problem that i can not control. So what in the hell made him think i would faithfully do a liquid diet for 2 weeks?

 

Sure i am a self-pay patient and that should be incentive enough. but it isn't. i did good the 1-3 days but i broke all the way down today for mother's day. i had grilled chicken, double baked potateo and corn. I ate a smaller portion as my stomach has shrink. but that food felt so good going down. I almost felt like hiding some of the food for later, i feel like i am never going to eat again!

 

I promised myself i would get back on track tomorrow and pull myself together. It is much easier to stick to the diet when i am at work but when the weekends come all hell breaks loose and i eat everything in site.:biggrin:

I didn't stick to the preop diet and came to in recovery without the band because my liver was too large. I hope that doesn't happen to you.

I could do any diet...for a while. I just couldn't keep it off. You still have to kind of diet with the band anyway....could be you aren't ready for it? (not being mean either, ok? just honest!)

The preop diet is bad but the post op phase is worse and it is imperative that you follow doc's directions then or you can cause slippage etc. So talk to your doc (I was on a 500 cal preop diet) and do some soul searching; see if this is really what you want. If you do, then diet like your life is on the line, because it may be!

The pre-op liquid is to lose whatever pounds you can. If your liver is too large (because you ignored the pre op diet), they'll send you home WITHOUT the band. You have to make a choice and lots of sacrifices. And, the band is not a magic cure. It still takes dedication, desire to lose and control. You eat smaller quantities, yes, but you must eat healthy quantities. Good luck!

Hiya,

Just found your blog and I've left you a couple of other comments...

You HAVE to stick to the liquid diet - think of it as preparing you for surgery and for the post-surgery period when you'll have to be on liquids. It's for your health - during the surgery and after.

Don't give in if you can help it - yes, I know it's tough, but so are you! You can do this...you wouldn't have made it this far through the banding process if you weren't tough enough.

Give up the solids temporarily so that you can enjoy them in moderation for the rest of your life...healthier and in much better shape than now.

You deserve nothing less than the healthiest, strongest and fittest body you can build - and changing how you eat is a major building block in that change. Start now on the journey that will serve you for the rest of your life.

It won't be easy, but it is necessary. You can do this!:)
