I am thinking about the lap band but my doctor is advising bypass as I lose weight very slowly. I have tried many diets like wieght watchers and still couldn't lose. Have had thyroid checked and all that. I really don't know what to do. I have about 90 lbs to lose total, not young, and I am at a loss as to what surgery to do. Has anyone else had problems before the band not losing and lost after? Appreciate your comments. :smile2:

I would do your own research and listen to the doctors. JMO- the biggest difference to me is to ask yourself 'Do you need to lose the weight fast because of health reasons?' If you have a bad obesity related comorbidity, you may need to lose it fast- RNY. Then 'Do you need the extra help of malabsorption and the negative reinforcement of dumping for bad foods?' If you have a hard time sticking to an eating plan (not just portion sizes)- RNY.

I can stick to a diet plan, I just need the help of feeling full and limiting my portion sizes and I don't mind losing slowly, so I decided on the band for me...for 2 of my M. Obese sisters, I would recommend RNY to them for the above reasons. It's a very personal choice and once you research it you'll figure out what's right for you. Good luck! -BG

Okay I can tell you why I chose the lapband. It is adjustable, it is reversible if there are problems or if you ever get very sick and NO malabsorptive issues! The lapband is laprascopic and RNY is major abd surgery.

I have lost 90 lbs in 6 months by following all of the rules most of the time.

I know someone that got bypass and now 4 years later can't tell the difference except she can't eat ice cream. There really wasn't any choice for me.

The decision is yours and everyone is different, but I think you know coming here that we would be biased.

Thank you for your opinion. I really do want to the band for all the reason you mentioned, especially it is safer and not as major surgery as the other. I am just so afraid I will not lose on it. But, I have some some really great loses here and I know it can work so positive thinking! Congratulations on your weight loss and thanks for the reply. It helps me make a decision.
