Bipolar and Lap Band

HI. I'm 26 years old, and have been diagnosed for about 5 years. In that time, my weight has gradually but steadily increased, to the point where now I feel I need to get a lap band just to curb the gain. I take Lithium and Lamictal for the ups and downs.

Here's the rub: for the insurance to cover the surgery, I need to be over a 40 BMI (300 lbs), or be over a 35 BMI and have a medical problem. I'm currently around a 37 BMI, but all my weight is around my stomach, and breathing has become a problem, though not quite asthmatic.

So, my question is this: is there anyone who went through the same kind of thing who could give me some guidance?

Thanks

For most insurances, they are looking for you to have one or more of the 5 big comorbidities (other things like asthma help, but they don't usually get you approved): sleep apnea, Type II Diabetes, Heart Issues from obesity, Hypertension, High-Cholesterol. Not only do you need a diagnosis, but you also need to show you are being treated/on medication for them. Start by getting a copy of your insurance policy and make sure you understand the requirements, then go to your PCP and have them do some testing for the above. Many people here find out they have one of these when they didn't know it before...if you do, get started on meds/treatment. Good luck! -BG
