I finally got my approval for my lap band for my insurance company today, I already had my initial doc appointment, I would like some of the side affects, do you get sick, I hear a lot about food getting stuck, what happens when food get stuck? do you have to throw up, I am trying to get as much information as possible the pros and cons from people who have actually had the surgery

Here is what I think are the side effects of the surgery:

  • Your weight loss is slower than other weight loss surgeries
  • You get food "stuck" if you don't follow the rules
  • You can't eat certain foods (this hasn't effected me yet, but I am due for a fill)
  • You have to deal mentally with only eating a small amount. Even though you feel full, your mind has a hard time grasping - the small amount you have eaten
  • You have to keep your fill at a good level - which may mean a lot of maintenance.

Stuck means when you take a bite that is too big, or that you haven't chewed very well and it doesn't want to pass into your stomach. It feels just like it sounds and it is usually accompanied by your mouth filling up with saliva (trying to help it go down)

I haven't had many of these problems - but I know they are there and I think about them - it helps keep me in check.

You are not going to magically not be hungry or get full with just a few bites or lose weight rapidly. It is a process and everyone reacts differently to this thing.

That being said I have dealt with:

Left shoulder pain when I've eaten too much or a large pill gets stuck.

Gas pain after eating that gets stuck in the lower stomach and can't make its way up past the band.

Port pain for about 2 months after surgery.

No more carbonated drinks.

No more Advil.

A little depression when I had second thoughts, after surgery. (Get all your question answered before surgery)

Lots of hic ups, burps and some constipation.

I haven't got any food stuck or BP'd, yet.

Good luck.
