Before doing the Op I was perfectly normal but over weight but no other affects. Now doing the Op I had a couple of worries. The first week was fine but following the second I got servier heartburn and was told to come in and remove the liquid from my band.

Which I did after a couple of days, then my Doc advised me it will better after 1 day i couldnt take it anymore and was advised to see another Doc who was a specialse in this at the same hospital. He then advised me that I have GERD-gastroesophageal reflux disease and would need to take medicine for this matter for 1 month and in this month the rate of me getting cured was 60% and if I still got it to keep with the meds until 3 months as the cure rate was 90%. However I did ask if I remove the band will I still have it he answered "I dont know" second question I asked when I have another filling will the pain be there again answered " I dont know". This all seems to me like a wait and see game. In which I dont have the time to wait about and see if I will fall sick again. The Doctors have said that you cannot connect the LapBand with GERD. And are saying I could have had Gerd before hand. (I find that very hard to beleive as how i mentoned earlier I was fine and didnt even know what reflox was before doing the band).

I have a couple of points I would like anyone who has the right answers to help out on

  1. Can the LapBand Cause GERD?
  2. If I remove the band will I be better?
  3. Is this common?( because I asked my doctor why wasnt I told i could have chance of getting reflux before the OP and he said because its not normal.
  4. Is it normal that my surgeon had inserted 2 cc filling at the time of the operation?

There is quite a lot more to this matter which I wont go into details about but I am very concern and need advise.

Thanks

P.s I did my Op on the 7 Feb and all I am eating is baby food is this normal and can I now eat solids?

Let me tell you of my story and you can decide for yourself. I've had a little, if only a fraction of indigestion before the band. But it was easy not to notice because the food kept it down. I ate a lot to take care of a that nagging hungry feeling.

Since being banded I too have developed Gerd. I lived with it for about 6 months before I was willing to go back to the doctor because I had lost a lot of weight and honestly I thought I didn't want to change any of that.

What I know know, is when I don't eat so much, I do have acid reflux or Gerd and all that eating before surgery was to surpress it. Now that there is not so much food disguising what was once mild symptoms has clearly raised it's head when there's less food coming in.

It's all a balancing act - he took some fluid out and I now feel much better.

I commend you for trying to find the answers but I wouldn't be so quick to blame your doctor. You're young, you're still starting out, you'll get there.

regards,

Nellie
