So Close... But Yet So Far

When i made the call to the bariatric clinic in February I wasn't sure how this journey would turn out. I wasn't sure if my insurance would cover it, I wasn't sure if my family was going to accept it, I wasn't sure how long it was going to take. As the days progressed to weeks and then to months, I'm finally at the tail of the process and the beginning of the real adventure but it seems things have s l o w e d down considerably.

 

I flew through the initial part of the process and everything went swimmingly until the sleep study which was a bit of a delay. Then my pre-op appointment was still several weeks from then (and still several weeks from now). So now I wait. And as they say: And idle mind is the devil's playground! I find myself going a little wild in my waiting time. I was so focused at the beginning of the process but now that i have a few weeks to go I'm eating things just because i know I can't eat them for a while. I think I've gained some weight and that can't be good since in my pre-op they may require me to lose more weight before surgery.

 

I've decided that today is the day. Not tomorrow, not Monday, but TODAY I'm going to start making sure I have my water in, eating things that will help along this road, and really re-focus because I don't want to go this far and then discover that my surgery will be delayed because I wanted to indulge myself.

 

I've spent the last 30 years indulging myself and it's time for a change.

 

I'm going to weigh myself today and set a 10 pound goal for my pre-op appoitnment on August 18th. I'm going to accomplish this by drinking water, walking, and planning my meals and sticking to the plan!

 

Did anyone else go completely off the rails during this time frame?

I am with you. I had my sleep study Sunday night, and I have my first appointment with the surgeon on Thursday. I am a little worried that I have gained weight since my initial evaluation with the nurse/mental health professional and dietician. It's like I'm trying to eat as much as I can before I am limited! YIKES! I gotta get my head on straight!

I am so glad I am not alone. I have a weigh in for my pre op meeting on Aug 11th, they told me make sure you lost at least close to that 15 lb mark, since the surgeon is a stickler. As we all know, if you lose 15 lbs 2 months before the weigh in you will regain it back.. So i have to figure out which crash diet to do to lose the last 6 or 7 lbs. I have had nothing but complications with getting approved for surgery(medically), extra testings and specialists... Never ending appts! So know you are not alone. Do you have your date yet? I hope it all works out for you guys!

I exhaled a tremendous sigh of relief after reading your comments. I was hoping there were some others who had similar experiences. I really buckled down today. I don't have a date yet but I can't wait until I do. It seems like it's just within my reach and I need to leap and grab it! Keep in touch and I love to hear how you guys are doing. Everyone relax. Most people have these same experiences and feelings. If it was as easy as sticking to a diet and never cheating, none of us would have ever needed the surgery. If you can stick to your pre surgery diet and exercise it will enhance your overall success and jump start your weight loss. Just do the best you can and stop beating yourself up. Drink your water and try to drink some protein drinks so you develop a taste for them and start walking every day. The rest will take care of itself. Wishing you all luck with a successful surgery and an easy time of healing. See you on your losers bench.

I clicked over to your blog since you're a fellow Rhode Islander, and our stats seem pretty similar, too! I began restricting carbs and calories pretty seriously at the start of June and I've lost about 24 lbs so far. I am hoping to be done with all the pre-op testing by mid-September. I've also set a goal to be under 300 lbs before surgery, and I'm about 15 lb away right now. I know that if I can get there (and I should) before the 2 week pre-op diet starts, I'll probably want to indulge with some food funerals, but am going to try to space them out to do minimal damage. ;) I always find lowering carbs helps me lose, but I agree--subbing in some protein drinks for breakfast and lunch should also help. If you have a liquid pre-op diet, you might find that you lose another 10 or 15 lbs that way too.

I went to my pre-op appointment the end of July, and the surgeon wanted me on 4 weeks of the liquid diet and to lose an additional 15 lbs. The surgery, of course, ended up being scheduled about 6 weeks out. I took the extra 2 weeks as an opportunity to phase in the liquid diet and spaced out the 'this is the last time' foods... I'm about 2.5 weeks our from surgery, and I've lost 10 of the 15 lbs requested by the surgeon. I also decided not to leave it entirely to chance (or my own will power), I'm working with a personal trainer to get fit for surgery (and beyond).
