Just wondering

My surgery date is March 12th. So grateful to have the date and in many ways I wish it was sooner and yet I'm glad for preparation time.

I know people that have had bariatric surgery of one sort or another and I seen their - well - their lack of success. Both have gained back all of their weight. One person is working to restore her health, the other isn't.

In this past year I've examined obesity. What keeps people obese? Why is losing weight so hard? Why is keeping it off harder? I'm closer to some of those answers but not totally clear on all of it yet - if I ever will be.

A part of my decision making on have a lap-band put in is that I want to better understand the psychological reasons for why I do what I do? And I decided that for me, the connection I must make is with a therapist, a doctor, and as I progress with both of those - surgery.

Interestingly enough - the people that I do know that have eaten around their surgery had limited support. Both people had their surgery away from their homes and struggled to find outside support. I know I have to take full advantage of the support I have at home and with my team.

Do you think support groups and some sort of team support has helped you?

I haven't used any support groups so far, but they say it helps with success. I've been lucky to have my hubby on this journey with me. He doesn't have a band, but he's changed his diet along with me and we've joined a gym. Exercise is key. Even if it's just a stroll through the neighborhood.

The only people I knew before getting my band were also unsuccessful. One lost about 60lbs but then got a bad infection around her band. They took all the saline out and she never got it filled again. She's kept off the weight but is still very heavy. The other lady just had no clue and from what I can gather, pretty much ate around the band.

We can't worry about other people's lack of success. Believe me, if the band didn't work most of the time, insurance companies would not be paying for it.

We have to realize that we still have to have a life style change. The band is just a tool. I have to change.

You can do it. You sound ppro-active and informed. That's more than a lot of other's. Just stay focused and you'll succeed! And, oh yeah, keep visiting this forum regularly. You learn a lot about what to do and especially what not to do.

Best wishes!

Hi Nancy, where I live, in the UK, the new referral system on the NHS includes 'The Weigh Ahead' Programme. This includes seeing a dietician, psychologist (with a referral to the mental health team if necessary) and other professionals if needed for a six month period. If you reach your targets you get referred to Bariatric Surgeons, where you are assessed again. At the time I considered it a nightmare and was thinking self funding. But I must say after coming through that and having my first appointment with the Bariatric Team I feel more equipped for the procedure and my success. This seems to reflect a little of your thoughts. Hope everything works out for you, and yes Leepers is right, the support here is invaluable.....

Hi Nancy:

First off you have made a wonderful decision to have the band.

The clinic you have chosen is very dedicated to their patients. The support staff are extremely qualified and can answer any question that you may have. You will find out more after the surgery is complete. They have web seminars about the band, nutrition, supplements etc. they even have a support web meeting once a month ( I haven't attended that one yet). They give you the tools to succeed.

Remember the Lap Band is a one step at a time program. 1 to 2 lbs a week weight loss-slow an steady wins the race to keep it off.
