Excited and scared as I am one step closer

blogs/blog-0072723001367209179.jpgI started this journey two years ago with mostly wishes. I had no insurance at that time but I researched every option anyway. I have three grown kids and 6 at home. One of my six is a foster baby. The others range in age from 10 - 17. I have to live to see everyone grown. In order to attain this goal, I had to do something drastic.

I am currently on 3 blood pressure medications, prilosec, 2 anti-depressants, have sleep apnea and moderate limiting arthritis. Most of all, I am too fat. I started putting on the pounds about 25 years ago, just after a complete hysterectomy. Those pounds have stubbornly held on no matter how hard I try to get them off.

I enjoy cooking and eating and sometimes eat for comfort. I am not really an overeater, just not a healthy eater. This is Texas and we fry everything.

I now have insurance and am driving 500 miles round trip to the only surgeon that will take Medicaid in Texas. He and his team are awesome. I have done all of the dieting, studying, tests, procedures and have a "go" from Cardiology, Pulmonology and my surgeon. Now, it is in the hands of Medicaid. They tell me it will be about 2 weeks for an answer. Then, I meet with the doctor one more time to set a date for surgery.

I am soooo excited. I am sooooo scared. My dream is finally coming to pass. What if I don't loose any weight? I will be able to lean over and pick something up off the floor. What if something goes wrong? I will be able to buy clothes from a regular store. What if I miss food too much? I will be able to walk more than two blocks without panting. Where will my comfort come from? (I already have a plan but it is still scary.)

So, here I am my new friends.

It's a new life. The shadows of the past will linger, but I'm finding they are slowly fading. This surgery truly is life changing. You will naturally adapt your behavior to conform to what your body needs. And, you will be able to hear your body talking to you more clearly than it ever did before. You are going to do great! Just cut yourself some slack during the healing process. Tell yourself, 'This, too, shall pass.'

Welcome! I'm pre-op, having surgery on Thursday. I've been in "the process" of getting this surgery approved since July of last year, so I've also had a lot of time to think about what it will be like on the other side...

The best I can tell you is that when you choose the sleeve, you're choosing an "as normal as possible" life post-op. Yes, you'll be tender and have a hard time bending over for a few weeks, and the stages of diet post-op are probably going to be a challenge, but ultimately, we will be able to eat the things we want, just much, much less of it. Some people do develop food sensitivities after surgery, but it's not as common as it is with gastric bypass.

I've been dieting since July and honestly, my tastes have already changed. I went through major carb withdrawal, but now a giant bowl of pasta doesn't even sound good to me - and I used to eat pasta nearly everyday! But even if my taste for pasta was still there, post-op I simply wouldn't not be capable of eating as much, so even if I do "indulge" in it, it won't be in the amount I was doing before! I'm looking forward to being able to have a small portion of anything and being satisfied. I've lived too long as the person who can EAT THE WHOLE THING (whatever 'thing' that may be).

The combo of being excited and scared is interesting, isn't it?? :) From what I've seen around this forum, it's totally natural!

Welcome to the board, I hope you get a response from Medicaid soon so you can schedule your surgery!!! Good luck!

Thanks to all. The carb withdrawl is already there for me. My entire body screams, "Give me more!" I would be so much better adjusted if I didn't have headaches and my blood sugar drops. I hate that.

Lol I can't bend over now so that little post op inconvenience will not be a problem for me.

I am so excited for you, makemyownluck! I will say a prayer for you Thursday morning. I can't wait to hear your after thoughts. Are you packed? What are you taking?

Judy

It will be different--but a good different. There will be pain, nausea, bandages and gas. Sometimes you will wonder if it was worth it. Then, one day you will wake up and feel normal but also healthy...and definitely lighter. You find a new optimism....

You will find...well...you.
