It's pretty normal, actually. It's called having a food funeral. Lots of people do it because they know they'll miss their favorites.

I'm hoping I won't feel the urge to have a food funeral and hike my weight up before the surgery, but I wouldn't say that it's impossible for me to do it in any way :) I know that after the first several months, I will likely be able to have a bite or two of the foods I really miss, just not have it in the kind of volume that I indulge now. Because of that, at least at this point I don't have any real urge to have a funeral yet. That said, I do think I'll have a nice steak dinner shortly before my pre-op diet starts, just because I really like a good steak properly prepared. I don't need a huge steak, just one with great flavor :)

Good luck!

i had a total food funeral for about 3 weeks before my surgery, steaks, chocolate+++ everything, and whilst I am not advocating this for you, I am so glad I did! i did gain 6lbs during that time but i made sure the week before surgery i reduced reduced and the reduced some more.. three days prior i did clear liquids only (just about killed me!!) this needs to happen though to shrink your liver, otherwize surgery can be postponed. I suppose it depends if you have been given a target before hand to lose some weight, i know lots of people have to show their determination by losing 10% but i think thats the insurance companies requirements? also my BMI was not really high (33.3) so yes you are right to have the feelings that you want to say goodbye to those foods for a few months!! if you do just cut it back the week before and if your insurance company need you to lose a bunch of weight don't do it!! as you will gain!

I totally did! I didn't have any pre surgery requirements until 12 hours before surgery so I ate till my hearts desire. Went up 16 pounds by the end of it all but it was totally worth it because I had no cravings or real wants for anything afterwards and now 3 weeks out tomorrow I am down 35 pounds.

I had a few things too... but I put them on a list, and I ate them one day after another (one day was a pizza burger, the next day sausage gravy and biscuits, chocloate in the afternoon... etc). Packing it all in was a sure fire way of making me feel like crap and getting me ready to start gearing down for the pre op diet.

I chose to phase my foods out. The first week was junk food and coffee (TOUGH WEEK), the next week was complex carbs, this week I am dropping fat and eating even less, and starting friday my actual pre-op two shakes and a low carb dinner....(fish or chicken and either green beans, mushrooms or cauliflower).

Just remember, food is NOT going to leave the planet. We just have to learn like babies how to eat all over again, and once you hit goal, of course you can have a taste or a nibble of your favorites now and again... its what its all about right? Everything in moderation... with our new skinny stomachs and matching lean bodies!! :D

I say don't do it, but that's just me. You will be able to have your favorite foods again just in smaller portions. It may be some time before you can but you will be able to eat normally again. You aren't saying goodbye to all food forever and whatever weight you gain while you are having your "food funeral" is just more weight that you have to lose after surgery. I'm not sure what your preop requirements are (I had to do a two week preop diet) but you need to take that into consideration too. I had tried to cut down on volume of what I was eating even before my preop diet so that when it started it wouldn't be so hard. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to have to do it again but I made it just fine. I did cheat once on accident (I drank chicken broth and apparently that was against my dr's rules, but hey, at least it wasn't worse). You have to do what is right for you and if you need that sendoff before surgery then you do. Just put lots of thought into it first. If you do it, enjoy it!!

I think it's normal. I did it a little bit (my husband made me a pork roast with roasted potatoes and carrots as my "last meal" before I went to liquids) BUT, like JillianMarie said, food is NOT going to leave the planet. You will be able to eat what you want again, just in small quantities. I am 7 weeks out and fortunately or unfortunately I can eat pretty much whatever I want. Now just because I can doesn't mean I should....but that's a whole other topic!! :)

ok Im so glad I wasnt alone in thinking the way I do!! I guess thats how I was seeing it as a food funeral ...I have cut back on sweets before i knew my surgery date and tried on sodas but now that the day will soon be here i wanna drink my pepsi and dr peppers! i dont really know if i will miss any my favs except for sweet tea! And you all are right! Plus the more I gain the more Il have to loose!! fortunally for me I guess i have no pre opp diet I do go to the dr on may 1st and they will tell me for sure everything that I will need to do! So No going crazy its just food! but i do think I will eat some hot chocolate pudding and king crab legs from my fav resturant The Boling Crab just one more time before its all said and done!! Thank you!!!! :)
