4 weeks post surgery

Hi all post surgery folk

I am now 4 weeks post surgery and struggling to eat anything more than yoghurt and the odd low fat cheese slice. If its a good day I can get down 2 rice crackers with a light topping. Pureed meat takes forever to digest. I am starting to think I may never eat solid food again. Is it just a matter of persisting with the pureed meat? Does it get easier? Am feeling a little downhearted about it all. The weight is coming off which is great, but this feels very tough.

So sorry to hear it is so rough for you right now. Could you think about ditiching the meats for a while? I'm told they can be the hardest thing to digest. Perhaps cottage cheese, hummus, peanut/almond/whatever nut butter, ricotta with a little tomato sauce, shrimp or soft flaky fish? Chili? Eggs - a little omlette? Good luck!

I completely understand! I, too am 4 weeks post surgery. I made it to the soft food stage but had to go back to liquids for a while. I am having esophageal spasms which cause excrutiating chest pain. I'm just waiting for the solution to the spasms then will go back to soft foods. I'm anxious to try soft foods again. My Dr.'s diet protocol allows only soft cheeses (melt in your mouth soft), cottage cheese, scrambled egg, or flaky fish (boiled, broiled, poached), and mushy non-starchy veggies for 3 weeks, then adding chicken and pork the following 3 weeks, then finally, if tolerated adding beef. I hope that's helpful info for you. Good luck!

I too am almost one month out and had to go back to yogurt, cottage cheese, jello, etc for several days. Food felt like it was stuck in my chest and I was so uncomfortable. Even though I feel like I am only eating enough to survive I cut back even more and the pain in my chest has subsided. I am eating scrambled eggs alot and drinking New Whey to get enough protein (they are available at WalMart). A couple of days ago I tried some tuna salad and ate 2 tablespoons every couple of hours and it went down great. I will not try beef for a long time - I never want that pain in my chest again. I also drink some V8 every day to get some veggies into my diet. I hope you can get better!

i think everyone is right.....meat sounds like its just too much for you right now. chili is the best......it's moist and the meat is broken down...you can also experiment with different kinds of meat in your chili. Yes! i ate alot of ricotta cheese bakes one month post op! refried beans with salsa and cheese cheese....i still eat chili almost daily at about 3 months post op.'

Perhaps try some canned meat such as tuna, chicken or salmon?

Or like some other posters said, maybe your body just isn't ready for it yet. When I had trouble getting my protein in, I fell back to my tried and true favorite, protein spiked sugarfree pudding. I could make it as protien rich as I needed to get my calories and protein in.

Good luck, you will get there, it just may take a bit longer.
