Exhausted, sick frequently and scared, help!

Hey guys! It's been a long time since I've been on here, too long! Kind of a confession if doing a bad job.... So here it goes...

I've lost 160lbs and I couldn't be happier! BUT! I don't know what's wrong with me anymore. My labs are ok, I had mild anemia that resolved but other than that nothing is obviously wrong clinically. Here is what I'm experiencing:

-extreme fatigue

-my body itches

-my brain is fuzzy

-sometimes it's hard to concentrate

-tingling in my toes and sometimes my fingers

-gas, cramping, bouts of diarrhea every other week

-nausea on and off

Those are my main symptoms. I don't have diabetes. I don't have thyroid problems (specifically checked for that) the only thing I can think of is I'm pretty sure I have a gluten intolerance and I'm not drinking enough water consistently. (I'll up my water for two or three days then go back to a liter for a couple days then up it again)

My diet hasn't been great (too many carbs and junk food), i just started taking protein powder again, I've been drinking beer 2-3 times a week and I don't work out. I get sick really easily if I over exert myself. All of that I know I have to change immediately and will do but is there something I'm missing? Is anyone else having these issues? What really scares me is the exhaustion and brain foggyness. Please help!!! Anything will help thank you!

Sorry to hear you're feeling not-so-great. A lot of the symptoms sound like Celiac Disease. Including the anemia. Maybe try cutting ALL gluten out for a few weeks and see what happens? I have a friend who is gluten-free and she swears it was almost miraculous how much better she feels now.

best of luck to you!

Thank you so much for your responses. I am going to start taking my B-12 again (sub lingual). What is is Q 10? I will be getting my food ready for a gluten free diet. I will try it for about two weeks then I will let you know! I have an appointment to see my surgeon on the 16th. Thank you again!

Try really really hard to drink your water. My father recently experienced itchiness, dizziness (He fell at a restaraunt even), confusion and fatigue. After NUMEROUS tests on his heart, brain, etc. and bloodwork they discovered he was chronically dehydrated. A few IV bags of fluids over a weeking and 64 oz of water a day and he's back to normal. This was all discovered 3 weeks ago and he even played golf today. See if your doctor will order and IV fluid boost to get you started. My dad felt better immediately after 2 bags of fluids. Good luck and keep us posted.

Sounds to me like gluten intolerance. I have it and all of your symptoms are associated with a gluten intolerance. I would definitely go gluten free and make sure that's what it is. Anemia is a symptom also. Good luck in finding the source of your problems.

I think what you need to do is get a hold of your bariatric team and be honest with them. They have the medical knowledge to help you figure out what is really going on and what needs to be done. I can understand your frustration, but sometimes trying to diagnosis ourself is worse that finding the real cause and eliminating the stress of the unknown. Good luck, Hope you feel better soon. Congrats too on your wonderful results!

Seems like you have the classic symptoms of Celiac. Take care of yourself, I'm sure you want to be healthy, and knowledge is power.

Celiac (SEE-lee-ak) disease is a digestive condition triggered by consumption of the protein gluten, which is primarily found in bread, pasta, cookies, pizza crust and many other foods containing wheat, barley or rye. People with celiac disease who eat foods containing gluten experience an immune reaction in their small intestines, causing damage to the inner surface of the small intestine and an inability to absorb certain nutrients.

Celiac disease can cause abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Eventually, the decreased absorption of nutrients (malabsorption) that occurs with celiac disease can cause vitamin deficiencies that deprive your brain, peripheral nervous system, bones, liver and other organs of vital nourishment.

No treatment can cure celiac disease. However, you can effectively manage celiac disease by changing your diet.

Celiac disease may also present itself in less obvious ways, including:

  • Irritability or depression
  • Anemia
  • Stomach upset
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle cramps
  • Skin rash
  • Mouth sores
  • Dental and bone disorders (such as osteoporosis)
  • Tingling in the legs and feet (neuropathy)

Some indications of malabsorption of nutrients that may result from celiac disease include:

  • Weight loss
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramps, gas and bloating
  • General weakness and fatigue
  • Foul-smelling or grayish stools that may be fatty or oily
  • Stunted growth (in children)
  • Osteoporosis
