Gastric Sleeve Surgery - What My Doc Told Me to Expect

I was really happily surprised to find out that my gastric sleeve surgery is expected to last less than an hour. Apparently my doc has done A LOT of theses and can pretty much knock them out like an assembly line.

I'm to check in at 7am, surgery is at 9:30am, expected to be back in my room by 10:30am. Spend the day recovering and walking. Next day drink the barium for the leak test and be released late in the afternoon.

He said not to expect any internal pain, the only pain should be at the incision points and very little gas discomfort. So we'll see.

Some of the unexpected things that I didn't find out until the last minute:

Had to go to the hospital for several tests - blood, ultra sound, chest xrays and EDG (camera down the throat to check out the stomach).

Have to go to the hospital with 72 hours of the surgery to get blood typed (in case of the need for a transfusion) and urine test.

So the only things I have left is the per surgery blood/urine test and then the surgery. Very excited.

My copay for the doctor has been about $2000 so far (office visits/surgery cost)

My hospital costs so far, $1000 (blood, ultra sound, chest xrays and EDG)

Costs still to be determined: pre-op blood/urine test and hospital costs for the 2 days pre and post surgery.

I had absolutely no gas pains at all after my surgery. :) I planned for it and even had the Gas-X strips in my "entertainment" bag that I packed for my overnight stay at the hospital. My doctor said that my surgery was by the book - and kind of boring. Yay to boring!!

I have had zero regrets for my surgery. Here's to a great surgery and recovery for you too!!

The only sad thing is that I haven't really had a chance to have a new favorite pair of jeans!! I've also learned that when you do start dropping weight, don't buy too many jeans - unless, of course, you wear them every day. We can only wear jeans to work on Fridays, so having one pair that fits is enough for me right now. I can wear the jeans on Fridays and on the weekends if I need to... the poor things get replaced too often.

Thanks kimbernada for the info. I too hope my surgery is boring and "by the numbers". I haven't worn jeans for years now. I like the "George" brand of slacks they sell at Wal-Mart. I have to dress professional at work, except for casual Fridays, but I still wear the slacks. Fortunately, I still have lots of my old shirts and jeans from when I was in my 250 - 270 range. It's only been in the past 3 years that I've gained the extra hundred pounds.

I plan on taking my laptop and a boat load of "The Big Bang Theory" episodes as part of my hospital kit, along with a few of the other things on the "hospital list" I found on the forum.

I am looking forward to having the "problem" of having to buy smaller clothes every few months.

Best wishes to you! Re the clothes, I did the same - used and still using clothes I had from when they fit at one time in the past...it's a very cool thing. As well, there is a SAVERS store nearby, and I have been going there since my surgery, getting 2nd hand clothing that is' in great shape, wearing it and then bringing it back to donate for resale, and buying more. Like having a giant inexpensive closet and the money goes to a good cause. At some point I'll buy more new clothing, right now I've only bought 3 new shirts - and they are too big after only 2 weeks...so Savers it is..

Joatsaint, are you just having surgery or according to your stats you had it in December. Are you male or female? I am just full of questions. Best of luck either way.

My surgery only took 45 minutes.. (My doc has done 3,000 bariatric surgeries so she was FAST)

The one thing I had that I didn't expect was spasms in my stomach.. They weren't unbearable, but they were severe enough to stop me in my tracks until they passed.. Other than that and a couple of waves of nausea, it was sometimes hard to remember that I'd even had surgery. I stopped pain medication after day two because I needed a bit of discomfort to remind myself to take it easy!

I had my surgery in December, but I republish these articles to share my experiences. I've read several blogs on here that had great information, but they were published long before I found this board. If I hadn't stumbled across them, I would not have had a chance to read other people's experiences. If they had republished them, it would have benefited more people.

An hour for the procedure is average. Every patient is different though, follow your preop diet so that your liver will shrink making it easier for your surgeon to see and maneuver around your stomach. The easier it is for your surgeon to work once he is inside your abdomen- then the quicker your surgery will be and the less gas they will need to use, reducing the chance of shoulder pain. They really shouldn't tell you there will be "no"pain from the gas. They inflate your abdomen with c02 and this is easily gotten rid of by your body but it can rise to your shoulders and make your first night very uncomfortable. The only cure is time and getting up to walk. If it does happen to you, please know it will go away after about a day and a half. I have had a couple of surgeries were they used the gas to inflate my abdomen. When I had the sleeve was my first and only experience with the shoulder pain. The absolute best thing for you to do is get up and walk. It is good for your circulation especially to prevent blood clots and helps your bowels to 'wake up' from the effects of the anesthesia. I wish you a pain free surgery and recovery. Good luck to you. You will enjoy your new tool! Take care and keep us updated!

I went to my surgeon on Tues and was told that my surgery would take two hours. He would test for leaks while I am in surgery and that way I will not have to be tested the day after. I should be in my room, if one is available, an hour or so after I wake up in recovery room. My doctor has done tons of these surgeries and I am hoping everything goes well.

okay, I am troubled. I had the surgery on Monday, and have not lost one ounce...is this normal? I am definately not overeating...rather struggling to get it all in.

thanks!

yes, it is normal, your body is still bloated with all the IV fluids they pumped into you post and pre-op. I gained about 6lbs the day after surgery, but it was gone in a few days.
