Coffee

Hello Everyone,

I have a question, please let me know! I am post op and I am just waiting for blood work to through so I can set my surgery date. I started this journey 5 months ago. The first thing that shocked me was that I had to give up coffee! I have a true addiction to coffee, I cannot stop drinking it! I gave it up for 2 weeks, but then I started again. No matter how many times I quit I start up again. I have often wondered if drug addicts go through this.

Can you please tell me if you are drinking coffee with caffeine in it? and how is it going? did you really quit? does it upset you stomach? Someone please tell me.

Thanks!

I switched to decaff about 2 weeks ago and I am having surgery on June 4th. I used to drink a PINT glass of coffee a day, plus real caffeinated tea, so I understand. Believe it or not, I'm doing okay with it. The thing I worried about the most was not being able to go potty in the am. I was cranky about 3 days and I'm doing okay. I would rather have withdrawals before surgery than a few days before surgery or after surgery.

Coffee is a diuretic and because you can't have it in the hospital for sure, you could end up with caffeine withdrawal headaches. I haven't had the surgery yet, but I read plenty of people that talk about headaches, and there's a good chance it's caffeine withdrawals. You will be fighting for the first week or so to get your liquids in so you do not become dehydrated.

I haven't had surgery, I drink 64 ounces of water a day and I am still considered dehydrated when I had some testing recently. I feared the quitting caffeine the most too, so you are not alone.

Remember you are going to have someone do surgery on you to take out 80 percent of your stomach. This is a life altering decision, giving up caffeine is a part of it, that you need to do to be healthy after surgery. Dehydration causes a lot of complications.

I wonder if anyone started drinking regular coffee again down the road, but I do know everyone is different and what some people can tolerate others can't. Good luck.

gave it up 2 weeks prior to my sleeve on April 12 b/c I had to do the liquid diet. I did have withdrawal headaches but now I'm 4wks post surgery and I don't crave it at all. I even have my own Keurig at home that's just sitting there with tons of K-cups! I love the smell when co-workers drink around me but I do have decaff on standby should I need a taste. I am drinking decaf tea and sometimes regular unsweet tea this week w/o any problems and still no cravings for coffee

I too LOVED my coffee. Gave it up 2 wks preop for liq diet. I am now 2-1/2 wks postop and still not drinking it. I was amazed that other than a couple headaches, I was okay with withdrawal. I may drink it again sometime in the future but don't have a plan to start again right now.

Hello my name is Kate. This is my coffee addiction salutation!

Just kidding...but I am also a coffee lover. I drank it til the end, even the last day before surgery. I had surgery 4/6 and am 5 weeks out today, and yesterday was my first cup of caffeinated coffee. I had decaf at home a few times, but I never could stand the stuff and I still can't. The real stuff didn't have quite the same appeal at this stage of the game, and I came back to hot tea this morning.

I do have dreams of hitting Starbucks for a Skinny Iced Mocha sometime very soon though!!

And, by the way, the caffeine did not upset my stomach when I reintroduced it at week 4.

I waited about 5 weeks before coffee post-op, then realized I needed more time - now, I must admit, as long as I ma getting in my water I will let myself have some coffee. I use lowfat creamer OR sometimes I will use mootopia (fortified milk w/ 12g protien for 8 oz...I also put benefiber in my coffee, so I cam claim some value! haha)

I gradually cut down on my coffee consumption until I wasn't drinking any about three weeks before my surgery. Now three weeks post-op, I have not had any and will not ever have any. My nutritionist cautions not to have more than one cup of coffee or tea a day or risk getting stomach ulcers.

I had my coffee up to surgery. Figured the painkillers would help me get thru the withdrawals. That is exactly what happened. I was advised during my preop appts that a cup of coffee a day wasn't what they were worried about, it was the numerous cups they were concerned with and the dehydration caused by "over consumption". I am going to stay away from it for a good long while though...since I am over the hump already.
