I had a meeting this week with one of my working groups that physically meets once a year for two days and so many people really noticed the difference with me. The team lead couldn’t figure it out, the difference I mean, so I told him that I lost 57 lbs with the assistance of a weight loss surgery called a gastric sleeve. Then I answered all the usually questions. So we got on the topic of weight loss surgery and one of the girls said that her sister died from WLS (Gastric Bypass). OMG. I felt sooooo bad but the weird thing about her story was she did not die from the surgery but 5 years after because she became addicted to food again. She didn’t go into the details but it seems to me based on what she was saying that her sister didn’t follow the doctor’s diet plan, very much like me friend who went through Gastric Bypass 10 years ago. There have been sooo many people who have come up to me to tell me about people they know people who gain their weight back after Gastric Bypass. I know I had a gastric sleeve but I really hope that I am not one of those who do gain their weight back.

On a happier note, I am a size 10 and I am 2 lbs. from being overweight. So far I have lost 58 lbs. in 81 days, that’s 5 lbs. a week on average. Of course I am no losing 5 lbs. a week but my breakdown is as follows:

Month 1: 35 lbs., Size 18/20, XXL

Month 2: 13 lbs., Size 14/12, L

Month 3: 10 lbs., Size 10, M

As you can see, it is slowing down. I hope to lose 10 lbs a month until I reach my goal. I have only 20 lbs. to lose to reach my personal goal but 30 for the doctor’s goal. I am thinking I should just stick with my doctor’s goal.

Lastly, my husband is going forward with his surgery. We went to his first appointment. They change their program a little so the cost went up by 100 bucks but that’s ok. We expect that he will go under in August.

It seems like everyone knows someone who died from WLS. And, no matter what the actual cause of death is, it's always blamed on WLS! I have heard horror stories time and again, but I've only met one person offline who actually even had/has complications from WLS. My late friend's sister in law came up to me at the funeral and told me all about her own problems with her WLS. I happen to know that this gal is totally non-compliant with her diet and exercise requirements, so I just nodded my head and thanked her for the information.

You do YOU and you'll continue to rock your sleeve! It sounds like you are doing terrific! :)

the only ones I have heard of dying was from back in the 80's when the surgery was still young. Also someone passed in a program that was just starting. They had more to do with the surgeon's than the actual procedure.

I know a few people with gastric bypass that didn't follow there diet, grazing all day long, eating a ton of sugar, and non-compliant with doc's orders. One gained 100 lbs back and the other about 40 lbs. I did give one a copy of the Basic Bootcamp diet from LilMiss Diva. I will have to call her to check up on how she's doing today. Great job on your WLS! I know you will Rock it! ;) please let us know how your hubby's surgery go. Maybe he can also join our little club here. ;)

I have a friend who told me to be sure I deal with the issues around food that got me here in the first place. She didn't have a "death" story, but she told me about a friend who had WLS and traded food for alcohol and now she is a "skinny drunk". I know she's right about dealing with the issues, but I hope she can be supportive of me. If not, well, I guess she's not a true friend.

But how many millions die from the effects of obesity?

So far I haven't gotten much negative feedback about my WLS but my mother did tell me that my niece had the lapband and she gained back all her weight and then some. So my mother said, "I hope that doesn't happen to you" and I felt like suddenly I was in the spotlight in a weird way.

Sometimes I think people want to see you fail. I don't really care, this is my journey and I'm giving it my best shot!!
