I've Been A Bad Girl...

Yea I think I need a verbal spanking. I didn't quite sabatage my weight loss, but I went too long without getting my protein in today trying to meet a presentation deadline for school and I ended up advancing my diet without my surgeons permission. Yes I know. Terrible. I had a small cup of tomato basil soup strained and I ate it over an hour. I'm a horrible, horrible person...

Now here is the kicker.

Not only did I feel horrible for doing this without permission, but it made me question if my restriction is where it should be. I can drink a can of broth over 30 min to an hour. I'm back to taking regular sips of drinks, except in the morining when I first wake. I don't get that full, i'm going to explode feeling unless I drink way too fast or take too many pills at once. Is this normal to be able to get down 8 ounces of soup or broth and not feel like i'm gonna puke?

I know what you're saying, "Rhap, if you had just left the soup alone, you wouldn't be here now obsessing over the size of your sleeve". Yes, you're right, but humor me. I have to make mistakes to learn right?

My hubby said it may be b/c the surgeon used a 34 instead of 32 like most people on here have, but I didn't think it would make that much of a difference this early out.

Please give my my verbal lashing. I deserve it, I know I do. And I promise it won't happen again. I'm trying to be a good example and follow the rules but the old brain took over today. and that is definitely something I'm going to have to work on.

Well Rhap, since I'm new and preop, I don't know much - but I do have my husband who is 1-year postop to tell you about. He has lost 100 pounds, but could have lost much, much more by now. I must admit, I wasn't much help to him this past year but little by little he increased his eating. He has a real sweet tooth, and he indulges. He has definitely stalled in loss and routinely regrets "eating too much" and too fast.I can see he could easily start to gain again at this rate. I can see how this surgery can be undone and am afraid for him. Hopefully, once I have the sleeve next month, he will get back on track with me. My advice to you is not to beat you down, but just warn you - be very, very careful with what you are doing. You know you can, you came this far not to undo it.

Thanks Joni! I didn't think of it as an indulgement, but I suppose in my mind I tried to rationalize it because I was actually feeling hunger for the first time in 2 weeks. You're absolutely right. I can't fall into bad habits again, otherwise, what was the point of the surgery?

You can fall into bad habits again. The surgery doesnt fix our head issues with food. It just keeps us from eating too much food at a sitting. Now soup is actually more liquid than anything else, so it can go through very quickly. Just because you drank 8 ounces of soup does NOT mean that you'll be able to eat huge amounts of food.

You said that you basically failed to plan and ended up taking in more/wrong food. You already know that you're going to have to plan better from here on out. I assume you're on clear liquids since soup is freaking you out, so make sure you prepare things that are allowed at this stage and take them with you. Later, it's a good idea to keep a couple of protein shakes handy and/or carry a protein bar at all times. I do lots of driving, so I make sure I always have a protein bar in my purse. That way I don't stop and eat somewhere that doesn't have good food choices for me.

BTW, you are NOT a bad girl. You're in a learning process right now and it does take some time! :) Good luck!

Rhap, I 've been wondering how you are doing.

A mis-step does not make you a bad girl! Please remember that, it is the all-or-nothing thinking that gets us overweight in the first place.

I had surgery on the same day as you, and I too can take normal sized drinks and I can keep drinking and drinking the protein shakes. I am hopeful that this is a normal part of healing and when we add some food, we will feel full.

Hang in there!

Joni said it quite well. If you've got to eat, so be it, just make sure you eat the right stuff and you'll be fine.

You are definitely right about the all or nothing thinking. That is something I need to work on. I tend to be really hard on myself.

Its REALLY reassuring that you can drink as much as I can. I was really scared that I had messed something up along the way. I guess I read too many horror stories in the post op forum that I mentally prepared myself just in case my surgery went the same way. I'm still learning my body. This surgery is like going through puberty all over again. I'm going to sit back, have patience, and embrace it.

you are absolutely right: Fail to plan, plan to fail. Thank you for your words of encouragement and reassurance! I have to remember this IS a learning process and it will get better :)
