Hungry As Hell, But Scared To Eat. It Hurts Going Down!

So, I've finally progressed from liquids to soft foods -- pudding, yogurt, eggs, etc. I was eager to eat but find it extremely unpleasant. I can feel the food traveling to my stomach and it's a very unpleasant feeling. I really feel it in my chest. It settles eventually, but not without much discomfort.

I know the surgery affects people differently, but I was wondering: Is anyone else experiencing this? And those of you who are 2, 3, 4 months or more out, did you experience it and how long did it persist?

I dread the thought that this could be a forever thing. That would really be depressing!

It will get better, I was sleeved on the 27th too and I can't eat soft foods until the fourth week. I wish I could, I start pureed foods on MOnday.

I guess I'm going to go back to liquids for now and maybe some soups (fat free cream soups). I had really looked forward to yogurt and stuff, but I'll wait and try it again in another week or so.

I had this problem, I absolutely hated to eat and I feared that I would become malnourished. I felt like my throat was too small for the food and that it would some how burst, lol. I am now 5 months out and although it is much better I still sometimes have this problem. What worked for me was finding foods that went down easy and caused the least discomfort. Soups, applesauce, jello and oatmeal was my saving grace and the only solid foods I would eat. I also juiced and made smoothies in the blender. The beginning is hard because you get tired of eating the same ol thing but it will get better

Take your time. It took me a lot longer to tolerate food than a lot of folks, but it's all okay now. Just do what you can, when you can. No hurry, and no pressure to stick to someone else's timeline. It's your body; listen to it and do what's right for you. Congratulations on your surgery! :-)

try to swallow smaller amounts at a time. It may seem strange, but even though this food isn't solid, you might be swallowing too much at once.

My doctor recommended that I drink maalox before eating if I started having a hard time swallowing. He also said....chew, chew, chew... if you are at that stage. I hope the discomfort eases soon.

Thanks, everyone. This is happening with yogurt so it's def not a chew issue. I will try less next time athough I was only doing a little on a teaspoon already.

I had my follow up visit today and I shared this with my surgeon. He told me to go back to liquids for a week then try soft foods again next week.

He also said that if it persists beyond the 6 week mark (post surgery) that there is a procedure he can do to open me up a little more -- putting a scope down and stretching it a little bit. He doesn't want to do it now because it's just too soon and I need to heal. Plus, it could improve on its own, he said.

I'm just glad to know that there may be a solution if it doesn't improve on its own. I can't imagine going through life with this issue.

Thanks again, everyone!

Wait until you get to about the 7th week or 8th week! I will get better. I've had the same thing. My hardest week was between week 6 and 7, I would throw-up almost everything except for the protein shakes. I'm just now past the 7 week point and I can finally eat some sort of solid food. I was getting rather concerned for a bit, but....each day truly gets better!

I'm hanging. I mean, what other choice do I have, anyway? I'm trying to develop a thicker skin, y'all. Thanks for all your words of encouragement. I sincerely appreciate it.

I was also sleeved on the 27th of Feb. in Mexico by Dr. Aceves....he and his team were fabulous...gave us written instruction as to what to eat and when...at 10 days I am just today getting to dring cloudy beverages...man what I would do for an egg!

Keep it up, you can do it!...your body knows what it can tollerate and when...I smushed a carrot the other dayin my soup and let a tiny bit go down...seemed fine! but know not to push the envelope...follow the dr. orders. Even if I take to big of drink of water...I sometimes feel I must breate in deep to help it pass thru.

Good Luck
