New To The Forum And Five Days Post-Op

I had my surgery on Monday, February 27, 2012. Admittedly, I've had a couple of fleeting moments of regret. But again, they were fleeting. This is not a decision I entered into lightly. Not to mention the lengthy process required to even get approved for the surgery. The initial pain and discomfort following the surgery had me wondering if I've made the right decision. I know that as I heal and get past this rough part, I will welcome the weight loss and all the other changes I look forward to, like not needing a seatbelt extender when flying and being able to wear the "gimme" t-shirts people handout and never have the plus sizes.

Today is the first day that I have felt like I can move around without my innards hurting. The gas pains are horrible, though. I knew I had a lactose intolerance but it was mild. I was able to drink protein shakes before my surgery and drank them quite a bit throughout the liver shrink diet. But post-op, I tried the same protein shakes and the gas is unbearable. So I had to switch to soy milk. The soy milk still gives me a little gas but nothing like the protein shakes.

I am starving but can only do liquids. I'm a little worried about not being able to consume enough protein during this phase since I can't drink the protein shakes. I can't wait until I move to the soft foods stage.

In addition to it all, very few people even know I've had the surgery so there aren't many people with whom I can discuss the aftermath and how I'm feeling. I'm glad to have found this forum and although I've never blogged before, I'm going to give it a try -- not only to document this journey for myself, but also because it might give others some insight into what this journey is like. I'm usually a very private person, so this is really new to me. However, I've decided that I'm going to be open and honest and just put it out there. From reading some of the other blogs and posts here, I feel like I am among the right community to do so. Thank you all!

Hi, I had my surgery on the 27th too, and the gas pains are still here when I swallow. However, I take my meds if they linger more than 5 minutes. You will feel better soon, we can do this!

That's what I keep telling myself. As the saying goes, "This, too, shall pass." I feel better today than I've felt all week, so already it's getting better. I am so doggone hungry, though! But know I can't eat and would be afraid to eat anyway.

My surgeon prescribed prevacid so I'm taking that. It helps but I still have the gas pains. Looking forward to the day when that gets better.

Maybe try almond milk. It tastes great and works just like regular milk and soy milk.. Even better I think!

Hang in there, you can do it!!! I got lucky, no issues at all. I was up walking 1 hour after getting back to my hospital room ( My surgery was Feb 9th) and was out shopping on the 13th, I just had to get out of the house. I had no gas...thanks goodness, my best friend had the bypass done and was miserable. Sending best wishes to you, it will all get better soon.

You should try muscle milk light it contains no milk and has 20gm of protein also have you tried GasX the nurse told me to try this as I had a bad attack of gas when I was leaving the hospital. I took it for a while after eating and bedtime for a few days it really helped me. good luck and It will get better this I know. I had surgery Jan. 20th.

Hi amencorner

I am post-op 4 weeks. Had my sleeve on Feb.13 and had the same feelings as you. I had moments when I regretted having it. I also had some complications like dehydration and bp meds. Once they were under control, I felt back to normal. I also was hungry on the liquid diet and am now on soft foods. It does get better so hang in there. Good Luck to you :)

Thank you all so much for your encouragement. I had the surgery a week ago today. Feeling better today than I did a few days ago. I am optimistic that I will continue to improve.

@ smileen: I'm going to try the muscle milk light. Thanks for hipping me to that. I didn't realize it contained no milk. Guess I should have looked at the ingredients instead of making assumptions based on the name of the product "muscle milk." :-) Also, my surgeon prescribed prevacid for the gas. But, admittedly, it doesn't seem to be working as well as I'd like. It helps, but I still have some issues. At least now the gas is escaping through more -- ahem -- traditional channels instead of roaming around my insides creating havoc. lol
