Keeping It Real

Mrs.Prisses

Today while preparing for a meeting at work my bosses boss came up to me and inquired; "I heard you had surgery. What does that do for you?" After hearing my spiel, she asked if I was interested in speaking about the journey toward health. (I work for a nation wide fitness company who has many other ventures on the fringe of what it does). My initial reaction was not shock or offense...even tho I wondered who had been talking about me. It made me feel good that she noticed how much weight I lost, but, made me feel even better because I would LOVE to shout to the world that you don't have to take morbid obesity sitting down! In essence, I think that what the devil meant for harm (gossip) was turned into a great opportunity (as God often makes it).

I didn't wear any makeup or hair or any jewelry today. I didn't have much in my closet that fit so I picked basic black pants and a button up top. Nothing about me today stood out in any manner. To be noticed because I am pursuing health, weather its negative attention or positive, says something to me.

Today, I woke up with my mind on 1000 things. I asked the Lord to guide me thru them all. I may have skipped the "Prisses" today but I managed to focus on what is real.

Today, keeping it real went right.

Oh my goodness! Keeping things real has been on my mind lately because with being overweight, I have tended to put on the Pollyanna face and kept people at a safe distance for fear they would see the "real" me. As if they can't already see the real me with my weight issues. I prayed yesterday for God to show me how to be more real and not feel like I have to present myself in a certain way to be liked. I have value that runs far deeper than jewelry and makeup. I am still a major work in progress but I understand completely what you are saying.

Praise God for showing us how to keep it real!

Wow! HIPAA comes to mind. You could have reacted differently but chose to take the higher road. In my opinion, if you wanted everyone to know your business it's for you to tell and not someone in the workplace that needs something to talk about. This is just a touchy subject with me. I am a HR Professional and I just delivered new hire orientation last night and we actually discussed medical information in the workplace. As for me, I have told a select few people that I work with and the first time somebody mentions "my surgery" to me that I didn't share my journey with I'll be ever so kind and explain what I want to explain and give a friendly reminder about HIPAA. Don't mean to be a prude or sound like a b**** but it's just not cool for someone to approach you with the "I heard" when it comes to medical...... Just my opinion...

Yea, I thought the same thing! I shared my information with 4 "work friends" (2 of which are outside work friends as well). The other was my boss (for FMLA) and a lady who is going thru a band to sleeve revision. Soooo....I was like "SOMEBODY has a mouth on them!" And perhaps I am too passive about it but I feel like if someone else asks me I would be lying if I didn't tell them EVERYTHING I am doing to get healthy.
