I am getting the sleeve on the 30th of this month. There is only one person that knows about it (my wife), I havent told my other family members because of fear of what they would say. I care what they (specially my moms) think and say but I still want to keep it between us.

What should I do?

Well they will probably be scared because your going to have surgery. the best way to let them know that you are going to have the surgery is to give them as much information as you can so you can calm their fears. let them know that you are not going to stand for negative or judgmental comments and let them know that they need to think before they ask there questions. if you don't give them an option to try to talk you out of having surgery the conversation will be a lot smoother. your other option is to not tell them at all until after the surgery.the bottom line is that your making a choice to better your life and you do not need a lot of negativity before or after surgery. Stay strong bro and good luck with the surgery.

I am also gtting sleeved on the 30th. I have only told a few good friends, a few people at work, my kids and three family members. I already regret telling so many people. I chose not to tell the rest of my family because I already knew I would not have their genuine support. The people that I have told I assumed I would have their support. I do from a few. But from others I do not. I plan to tell people after the fact when I am asked but I will not volunteer the information. My thought on waiting until afterwards is that they have no choice but to accept my decision.

If you can get by without their support while at the hospital and during the first couple of weeks recovering, I would consider not telling them for now.

Good luck on the 30th! I started the pre-op diet yesterday. I knew it would be tough these first few days. And it is. :-)

I only told my husband and my older children. I also told my mother because well, she's my mother and I knew she wouldn't betray me by telling people about it.

I say keep it to yourself, but be prepared to answer questions like "how'd you lose the weight?" and "What's your secret to weight loss?". You're going to lose weight rapidly, so the drastic change always gets people's attention.

I find myself getting a little uncomfortable when asked these questions, so I give my usual answer of "Oh, I been drinking protein shakes and I cut back on my portions in addition to going to the gym". So far it's kept people at bey, but I do feel a little guilty at times because I have friends who want to know what kind of shakes I'm on and want to follow my food plan to the tee. smh

Its a difficult thing - deciding whether to tell people or not. You're under enough stress with dealing with the situation, you don't need naysayers and fearmongers crawling up your....leg.

If you feel obligated to tell them, I'd wait until the last minute - that way they don't have time to weigh on you about it. Let them know you've done your research, made your decision and its a topic not open for discussion or negative comments - and stick by that! They may have questions, which is normal, but you can answer those questions with an email or showing them a website.

Bottom line, you know your body better than anyone and you've decided what your body needs. Good luck!

Its not a secret, I'm proud of the decison I've made to get my weight and health under control. However,, there are some that see this surgery as the easy way out and will have negative comments. There are some that will say "you don't need that just excersise and cut back on your food intake" . its easy for others to give comments

My suggestion is to only tell those that need to know.. Tell those that you will need support from while in the hospital and during the first 3 weeks of recovery. You can tell others as you move forward. It might be easier on some to know after its done.. then they can't try to talk you out of it, or worry about you during recovery.

Good luck. I'm about 9 weeks out and feeling really good. I have zero regrets. However, be prepared for the first few weeks to be rough. I cried from the weakness and length of strengh I had even through week 3. Now I'm on vitamins, getting in the right amount of protien, leaving out the carbs, drinking the right amount of water and feeling good and satisfied.
