Will This Liquid Diet Ever End? :/

I started this liquid pre-op diet last week on Nov. 28th. It has been one of the hardest things I have ever done! To go from not counting calories and eating whatever I want... to barely 800 calories of just protein shakes and yogurt, seems kinda like torture if you think about it. It is like taking a drug addict's drug and saying too bad you can't have it... but the catch with a food addict is... you have to have some, and you can't cut it out completely.

So I just ate a baked chicken breast (I was about to lose my mind... my stomach was growling so bad)... this is something I would never have felt guilty about before. It is healthy and it is protein. I had a couple last week when I was first starting too. I wonder if my Doctor is gonna grill about that. The only other thing I've had is a spoon of peanut butter a couple of days last week.

Does anybody know if the Dr. will ask you if you ate anything other than what is on the list? I think my liver will still be smaller, and I've lost 8 pounds in 8 days. IDK... I guess I'm just worried. Making it the best I can, but this is killer!! :(

Eight pounds in eight days is great! I remember my pre-op diet...it was pure torture. I felt like I cheated at least twice a day. My doc never really asked me about it except for the last two days before surgery it was really important to him that I stayed on clear liquids only. Stay strong and remember that IT GETS BETTER! In a few months this will be a faint memory compared to all the new ones you'll be making as your new, skinny self. Best of luck!

I had the same experience. During my pre-op diet I ate at least a very small portion of protien and still lost the weight my doc needed me to lose. Do not go crazy stay away from the things that got you here, sweets and carbs. But get ready for several months of this.. The Post Op diet is not any better until your stomach heals.. Hang in there your moving into a life style change that takes time to adjust.

Thanks! I look for to those "skinny day" memories!! I'm trying my best not to cheat... and if I do its only been with protein.

Good luck to both of you in your journey as well!

A lot of surgeons (not mine tho) have their people do 2 or 3 protein shakes and 1 lean meat and veggie meal a day.

Thank heavens I am past that stage (and that doesn't mean it necessarily gets easier-just different). I agree with Bitties however that it is REALLY important that you do the clear liquids for a few days before surgery.

Here's my pre diet

Breakfast: 1/2 cup low fat cottage cheese

1/2 cup fruit

AM Snack: UNJURY

Lunch: 2oz. turkey 1 oz low fat cheese 1 low-carb wrap lettuce, raw veg

mid afternoon: UNJURY

Dinner: 4-6 oz very lean meat, poultry or fish, 1-2 cups low carb vegetables, large green salad with 1 T dressing, sugar free jell-o with 1/2 cup fruit

Evening: UNJURY

They also give you other choices. Oh by the way UNJURY is the protien powder, they make you buy 3 of them, to make it thru the pre diet. I have been on this since Nov. 28, and have lost 9 pounds. I have my surgery on 12/12 and will most likely lose another 4 or 5. So It is weird to see all the differant diets, they put people on. I'm having my surgery at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City Michigan.

i haven't started my pre-op diet yet, but the nutritionist told me it would be 2 shakes and a "real" meal everyday. so i would think what you've done would be fine--i also wonder if they assume a certain amount of "cheating" because it is such a drastic change?

Thanks for addressing this. I am on my 3rd pre-op diet day. I get 3 shakes and one small protein and vegetable meal. My meal was ham and brussel sprouts. I cheated with more ham. I'm hoping tomorrow will be better.
