Why should we hide that we had surgery?

Maddy

Recently I ran into an old friend I haven't seen in a while. She recognized my weight loss Nf asked me how I lost the weight. I hesitated for a moment. I wasn't sure if I should tell her I had the gastric surgery 3 months ago. Why? I decided quickly to tell her that I had the surgery. Why should we hide our smart decision to finally attack our weight issue? Do you have a hard time telling people about your weight decision?

Good for you! My opinion is that we ought to "out" this treatment for obesity and have it accepted for what it is - treatment for an issue that interferes with our being able to live a full life. If I remember right, it used to be that being treated for cancer was kept hush-hush and was thought to be embarassing. Illness and disease are a fact of life and getting treatment should be supported as taking life-affirming action - because it is! Won't happen until we who are getting the treatment talk about it as a matter-of-fact solution to a problem that millions share. End of sermon!

I agree.. has someone not shared their success story with me...I wou;dn't be doing it either. I am grateful to ALL the people who shared their WLS stories with me! :)

I hope I inspire someone or many...to change their life-time of obesity to a life-time of being healthy!

I have only outed to only a few of my friends. I feel that they will judge me, and I do know what several of them think about weight loss surgery there favorite think to say is " IT'S THE EASY WAY OUT AND THAT OBESE PEOPLE JUST DO IT SO THEY DON'T HAVE TO DO ANY WORK TO LOSE WEIGHT", I'm gaining confidence daily I will tell them eventually because I want them to know the truth IT ISN'T EASY , IT IS A LIFE CHANGE YOU HAVE TO BE WILLING TO TAKE, FOR LIFE! I have prepared for 3 years for my surgery and it Has come and gone and I'm out only three weeks, but it is hard to change from your old eating habits, its hard to not want that Ben & jerrys when you are having a bad day , but with GOD by my side I CAN DO THIS, and soon people will start noticing the weight loss and y then I hope I will be confortable telling them the AWESOME CHOICE I MADE FOR A HEALTHIER LIFE !!!!

I see no shame in saying I made a decision to improve my quality of life and to opt. for longevity! Our co-morbidities were killing us so why be embarrased for make a positive step towards eliminating one of the key factors? I definitely don't think its the "easy" way out, to me its a "brave" decision. I have tried almost all of my adult life , I have always been on a diet and to no avail never saw my problems cease. So for those who want to pass judgement I reply , "I hope you never have to walk a day in my shoes, because I wish this on no one!" Even with the sleeve its not "easy" we do work at learning our new patterns and learning to work with what we have!

I only told close family in the begining and to this day I don't tell anyone unless they ask me directly how I lost weight.

I completely agree with everyone here. So why do I feel embarrassed to talk about it with people? This is not like me. I have to examine this.... Thank you for your post!

Your welcome Ivy. Its so important for us to not be afraid to say "hey we did this for us". I have the backing of my family. My husband and daughter have been my biggest supporters. So glad that we have this fourm to talk about our fears.
