This journey of mine...

Well, I am definately one of the new kids on the block. I've been checking out the boards & topics and the blogs. I'm starting to feel like this is a place that will be a great way to connect with others that are considering or have gone through VSG surgery.

I'm in week two of a 12 week pre-op program with Kaiser - Southern California for VSG. I go to classes every week, one week with the behavioral therapist and the next with the nutritionist - back and forth. There are about 25 people in my group. I was put on a 1500 calorie diet and so far, so good. I've been doing Weight Watchers since summer, so it's not so different. I've lost about 14 pounds since mid August. The Options program at Kaiser asks that you lose 10% before surgery - so we are all working it!

I have already felt so much encouragement just by reading your stories and the various educational threads.

I'm 56 and I work full time for a large public University. I have 3 young adult children and 1 grandson. My kids have mixed feelings about me entering this program, both from a standpoint of concern for surgery, and I also think that they have only really known me as their overweight mom, but beautiful in their eyes. I feel good about myself - from the inside, and I know I have a great smile and a heart of gold, but my weight keeps me from feeling that I look my best, and I would love to have more energy and more longevity.

I look forward to this journey of mine....

Katie, best wishes to you on your journey! You will love the results you get from your sleeve! I feel like almost a new person ... hard to believe a year ago I weighed about 80 lbs. more than I do now ... my energy level is much higher and I am sure yours will be too! Do you have your surgery date yet?

Katie....

I too, am a so. cal kaiser pt and went throught the options class in Fontana, Ca. I am one mo. post op now from having vsg surgery with Dr. Fedorka. So far so good!!

I am down 25lbs...woo hoo!! At first I was fatigued and felt like I was tired alot but now I have my energy back and it feels so awesome to be loosing weight and having my clothes fit looser. I just returned from a 4 day vacation with my sis (somewhat of a challege with the eating) but weighed this am and lost 3 additional lbs. Man, was I thrilled!!

Never in my lifetime have I lost weight on a vacation?!! Awesome!!! I am 55 years old and have 2 adult children. My husband and children are supportive of my journey.

Can"t get use to the feeling of feeling full after one scrambled egg and applesauce...a blessing!! Good Luck to you!! The Kaiser program is a long haul but they are awesome and very good.

Who is your surgeon?

Keep up your good work with your pre-op diet. I wasn't that good...lost only 4lbs prior to surgery!!

Take Care...Robyn

Hello Kris & Robyn....

Thanks for your messages. I do not know who my surgeon will be yet, but I've heard there are several medical centers from which to choose. I will probably have my surgery in San Diego at Scripps. My brother lives down there and I can stay there for a few days before returning to Los Angeles.

I've had a good weekend and I have a weigh in tomorrow. My weight loss is steady....but of course tonight is my granddaughter's birthday and my daughter and her partner are making chicken enchiladas and there will be cake and ice cream. Since the prep and dinner will be at my house after my grandson's soccer practice, I plan on stepping in to make my own enchiladas, and not pre-fry the tortillas before coating with sauce and limit my cheese just to the top but just leave the shredded chicken as the filling to cut down on calories. I am also limiting what I am eating during the day so I can have a small piece of cake. Mostly I am having fruit today and a salad for lunch. It will not be a binge that's for sure.

My understanding is we have to finish the twelve week program and lose 5% and then we will be scheduled to meet with our surgeon to discuss surgery. They said the surgeon will ask for another 5% of weight loss before surgery - and perhaps that might be on a specialized diet to lose fat in the liver. I'm just going to do whatever they tell me and work through the system.

I guess the major difference this time around in my weight loss journey....is that I am ready and I can already visualize my success!

Katie
