Hi - Hello - Hola - Howdy - Hallo - Konnichi wa - NuqneH? & Arrrrgh!

New to the whole idea of WLS, and especially VSG -- but after much research & upon the advice of my Doctor, believe whole-heartedly that this is the best option for me.

I was told 4 weeks ago that I needed total knee replacement surgery (we thought that I'd just been dealing with a knee injury that wasn't healing...!) -- and that my doctor wouldn't perform knee replacement until I'd lost a significant amount of weight. Knee doctor referred me to Dr. Ramiro "Sonny" Cavazos @ The Texas Center for Medical & Surgical Weight Loss. Had my first appointment with him + Nutritionist & Behavioral Health on 5/26/11 & am now doing 3 months of medically supervised weight loss as per my insurance company (already down 23 lbs!) & hoping to have a surgery date the end of August / beginning of September 2011.

Motivated & very excited!

Highest weight : 328 May 2011

Goal: 150-ish

Hey Epiphany, good for you! My knees and hips were my major motivation for getting sleeved! I had a hip replacement at age 48, and at the time the doctor told me to loose weight to make the replacement last longer. Well what did I do? I gained weight, like 50 pounds of it! So now not only does my "good" hip hurt, but so does the one that was replaced 15 years ago. And of course, my knees hurt also. I dread having to have the original hip replacement re-done, and don't want to replace any other joints either, so I decided to make an investment in my future life, and try to loose weight for GOOD this time!

I am two weeks post op, and have lost a total of 34 pounds, 20 on the pre-op diet and 14 since surgery. I find getting on the scale every morning to be the high point of my day! I used to avoid the scale like poison! So congratulations and best wishes for a great outcome. Keep us posted!

Hey Epiphany -

Just out of curiosity - what portion of the surgery does your insurance cover? I manage the benefits for our company and we do not offer WLS as an option - so I am going to Mexico where it is a lot cheaper and paying for it myself. At first everyone said "Mexico? Really" and then I tell them about this place where they treat you like you are a guest at a resort. Plus I talked to several people from town that went to this hospital.

Anyway - I would like to promote our work place covering a portion of this surgery and so I am curious how benefits are being managed. I notice that you have requirements before the surgery. Are all of the "pre-treatments" included in the cost or are they additional?

My sleeve is scheduled for Sep 2 and I don't have to do any kind of a diet until 3 days pre-op.

Hi Reb ~

I have a $5000 deductible for WLS --- not sure about all the other coverage details just yet... I have my 2nd appointment tomorrow & I'll be asking those questions. :)

Mexico is a lovely place!! I was lucky to be able to live in San Miguel de Allende for a year & absolutely LOVED it! Medical care there was just as good as any care I received in the states & yes, quite a bit less expensive!

Best to you!

:)

Hi Kathy ~

I know what you mean about getting on the scale! I'm enjoying it these days too! :)

My hope is that once I lose all this excess weight that maybe my knees will forgive me (!!) and I won't NEED knee replacement... not likely, I know, but I can still hope!

Congratulations on the 34 lbs lost!! That's fabulous!!

Best to you!

:)
