How long until I begin to feel "normal"?

I am finishing my second week after VSG and am getting frustrated, because it seems like there are very few things that I can eat right now and my stomach not hurt. I am still trying to distinguish between pain (although it'c very little) and hunger (???) and trying to figure out what my body is trying to tell me. And then there is also distinguishing between gas and diarreah (BIG issue). I am in the pureed food stage (baby food, :tongue_smilie:although not appetizing, settles best on my stomach). I am also still doing protein shakes some, because they seem to satisfy and my belly's not upset after. I am trying to follow all the rules, but I am wondering how long until I can just eat something without it hurting? I also am feeling the "airy, burpy" thing going on when I swallow too much (which is more than a sip) at a time. Those of you who are way down the road, what do you think? :cursing:

It will get better but it is a learning experience to figure out what your new tummy can stand. Sometimes it wants warm things, tea, soup/broth or cold/cool things of yogurt, applesauce, sf popsicles etc. You will settle in and it WILL get better, just part of the journey. It becomes second nature to know what works for you.

It has only been 4 weeks since my surgery--but I can tell you that it sounds like I felt a lot like you when I was at 2 weeks I kept trying to reassure myself, but I was fighting a lot of fear that things wouldn't improve and I would be stuck feeling miserable and never able to eat regular food again. Anyway, I'm feeling much better now. I still can't eat very much, and I'm being careful to eat mushies and chew very well--but I'm not having as much discomfort as I did 2 weeks ago, and the improvement has helped me feel calmer and more confident about the future!

Thanks, guys. I am just impatient. I know I'm never going to eat like I used to, but last night I had a dream that I cooked myself a big ol' hamburger, put pickles, lettuce, tomato and all that on it, brought some fries out of the oven, had ketchup on my plate, and brought it all to the table to eat it with a Diet Coke. Then I woke up and didn't even get to eat it! But then I realized that I will not be a slave to that anymore, and it made the whole surgery experience worth every minute.
