You have to learn to eat with your band

I read a post that a doctor told a patient that you will be relying on protein shakes the rest of your life because you can't possilbly consume enough protein in one day for the requirements. I say that is utter nonsense and no doctor should expect you to live off of protein shakes. Even being tight in the morning you can consume some yogurt or oatmeal that has protein in it. Or add some protein powder if you have too. But you have to learn to eat with your band and if you are more then three months out and still relying on protein shakes then you need to rethink your eating strategy.

 

Yes I am tight in the morning but I can get in Greek yogurt, eggs, Quaker weight control oatmeal, cream of wheat, without relying on protein shakes. I have not drank them except after a fill since I was a month post op. I want to consume food and not liquid calories. What is the point of having something if you have to drink your meals. You might as well skip surgery and do slim fast because that is exactly what you are doing. I can easily get in 90 grams of protein per day on food.

 

 

If your doctor insist that you have to drink protein shakes the rest of your life then I would find a new doctor. There is no reason to drink them just for protein when all you're doing is drinking liquids that won't keep you full. It's everyones choice what they want to do but if you can't learn to eat real food with your band then what's the point. I would rather have a full stomach that will be satisfied for 4 hours then drink liquid calories just to get in protein. No way no how am I living off of shakes to get in protein. Just my thoughts and opinion.

I have a protein shake every morning for breakfast because I hate breakfast foods. My choice not the doctor's. I use to love french toast and had 1/2 a piece a few weeks ago and it did nothing for me. Weird how your favorite turns into, blah.

Cheryl...I totally agree! Had a DR told me that I would be on protein shakes forever.....this would have NEVER been an option for me! I would rather eat a small cup of food per sitting forever than be forced to drink shakes forever.

I'm the author of the post Cheryl is speaking of, and the patient of the doctor above.

Cheryl, my doctor does encourage good eating habits. His point in suggesting that we drink a protein shake daily for the rest of our lives is because so many patients don't get enough protein. If I feel I am getting enough protein, this is certainly something I can discuss with the nutritionist on his staff and get her recommendations. I already have some hair loss from a prior time, and I don't want to lose anymore, so I am definitely going to follow his orders initially. But everything is negotiable, other than drinking carbonation.

The point of his instructions are to give his patients an outline of what will provide them the best health. He is the one with the years of experience of following his patients and seeing what they need. The protein shake is the simplest way to ensure that his patients are meeting their daily 80 grams of protein.

Hopefully I'll be like you and will eat enough in my foods to get the required protein. If so, I'll talk to the nutritionist. But I do need to be aware of the need for protein even 20 years from now. People's eating habits change as they get older. I think he wants to make sure that we are all okay and that we understand the need for protein.

If the shakes are driving me crazy, I can always throw a scoop of protein powder in a recipe and get it that way.

And yes, it should be my choice. It is my choice whether I follow his instructions, or whether I find a way to adapt them satisfactorily. One thing for sure, I now know how important it is to get that much protein FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE, and if I am not getting it through my food, I will be drinking a shake. Premier Protein ones are quite tasty and easy to have in my purse wherever I am.

Its vitamin deficiency that causes hair loss not lack of protein my friend. I would hate to think I would have to live on protein shakes the rest of my life when I can eat enough food to get it. Making good choices in food is the key to getting enough protein.
