Will I Ever Learn?

I'm thinking I'm the only person that, knowing I must eat slooooowly & chew/chew/chew, I manage to still try to inhale my food. In my mind, I'm slowing down, but in reality, apparently I'm not.

I swear I'm trying, but not enough! Gosh, it's so frustrating because you know what happens when you eat to fast. Your stomach or esophogus... IDK... rejects it.... And then guess what happens? Apparently, I'm good at having the food come back up.

I'm so frustrated with myself. I actually had this happen 2 or 3 times this weekend, seriously.:angry:

I try to put my fork / spoon down, but I guess I just pick the damn thing back up again too quickly. My husband even reminds me, "slow down Fran."

Done venting.... back to eating again. See? I waited to take my next bite until I was done complaining about myself

It could also be the size of the bites you are taking and how well you are chewing them.

I have done this to myself too and figure I will learn but 40 years of eating habits are hard to undo. I have found myself a few times eating "normal" without thinking and finding out real quick it was the wrong thing to do. Unfortunately, mine didn't always come up and instead caused agony/pain.

Nonetheless, I get frustrated too as "I know better". We will get this band figured out!! One of my coworkers was banded a few years ago and when I told him about my incidents, he laughed stating "well, it's working". Let that be a reminder the band is alive and well.

Good luck! :)

You are not th only one I do it tooo. I try I really try but I just hav enot gotten it yet and I drink with food too because I tak ebig bites and certain foods are hard to get down. Now thankfully or not I hav enot really gotten a "stuck" episode I feel th efood going down but thats it, no nausea, vomiting, nothing!! Somwtimes I think If I had something like that happen to me maybe I would learn the lesson once and for all =( I'll kepp trying and everytime I catch my self inhaling my food I start over with the next bite and I no longer take drink to the table when i'm eating but the fridge is close enough that I can reach if I need too.

OK, so my Dr. told me to say the "ABC's" after each drink )still in my liquid phase post op) Hard habit but after having a runny nose from too much liquid inhaled, I repeat the abc's and it kinds seems to work.

I've heard lots of tips....I try to practice these...I only got stuck two times and that was due to NOT chewing enough before swallowing....and then my chest was ON FIRE and I thought I was having a heart attack....so the incentive to not repeat that is definitely innate in me.

  • set fork down after EVERY bite
  • Count chews (I usually chew 30-40 times to get it mushy...and I imagine trying to put the food through a funnel...it has to be that small and I do not swallow until its that's small.)
  • Strike up a conversation with whomever you are eating with...how's the beans? is that the way you like them best? etc...idle chit chat
  • Then I take another bite, chew, talk....repeat
  • I also measure my food out up to 1 cup (I have a visual problem and I still want to eat even when I'm full) I've been overfull which is very uncomfortable too so limit myself.
