Question About Getting Stuck

roxa

I've heard a lot of people talking about "getting stuck". I've had that happen before with food or liquid (I'm not banded yet) and it hurts really bad but only last for a few seconds. Is that what it feels like when you get stuck after you are banded???

Eat a hard boiled egg really fast and wash it down with a couple of swallow of Coke. That's what being stuck feels like! I never felt anything like it pre surgery, so not sure you're feeling it either. It'll last for more than a couple of seconds, if you're truly stuck. Lately, after 2 1/2 yrs of vomiting to get thru a stuck episode, I've been riding them out (after my band slipped from too much vomiting). They definately make it more important to chew and eat slowly! Good luck!

Stuck episodes are not fun but we cause them ourselves by not chewing, taking to large of a bite, etc. They do hurt and you almost always vomit and than it irritates your band and your not able to eat for 12 hours or more. Too many of these will cause your band to slip, so lessons we all learned the hard way, chew your food and take itty bitty bites.

Everytime you eat....you have to use your mind and not just your fork !! It should take you 30 mintures to eat a meal and that's fast.......No washing it down either...that just makes you bring it all back up. It's all a mind game now.......but after you listen to your head........and get it,, then it will be easier........I am 10 months post and still have had a few episodes......Eat Smart ! Chew like you have never chewed before !

. just don't knock yourself out if that happens a few times.

Thankfully, I am 9 months post surgery and I have not had a single episode of getting stuck. I have been very careful about reteaching my brain and body to slow down and chew, both thoroughly and slowly before I swallow anything. I thought I was about to change my "zero" record this morning when I stupidly tried to swallow one of the fish oil tablets I used to take before surgery. My brain had a stupid moment when 'it' thought I wouldn't have any trouble swallowing a pill the size of a small football! I can still feel it 6 hours and many icky burps later; but I did not vomit, staying calm and talking my brain through the pain was an experience I care not to repeat.

Getting stuck isnt always your fault. Some things are going to get stuck regardless of how much you chew. That is how you find out what your band will and will not tolerate. I can't eat meat no matter what it wont go down. I could puree it and it will still get stuck. It's painful very painful and can not always be helped.

That is a very scary thought but I guess there is nothing I can do except be very careful like you all have said.

Thank you Cheryl for hope!
