Scared And Frustrated! Almost 1 Year Post Op!

Well here I am, almost 1 year post and something unexpected occured. I have noticed over the last month that I have been extremely hungry and feel like I could eat the entire kitchen (although I could only get a cabinet)! Something didn't seem right. I thought I was due for a fill (last fill was 7 months ago). I wasn't gaining weight, in fact I was still losing, but only like .5-1lb a month. Not very exciting. So I went to my doctor yesterday and after numerous giant needle pokes and failed attempts at a fill, the doctor says "lets not panic just yet!" Really? How can you say that to someone when there is a needle sticking out of their stomach and you can't pull out ANY, not one drop of fluid from my band that I saw you put in 8.5cc's back in November! A second doctor walks in and tries it as well without success. So, I see the doctor again tomorrow to attempt it again and then go for a plan of action. Could be a leak, a broken port, broken tube and the band may have slipped since all the fluid is potentially missing. I had an upper GI done back in February to ensure everything was still in place (due to low blood pressure - everything checked out). Everything was perfect! Now this!

I really don't want to put my body through another surgery. Lord knows I have had a lot in my 32 years. So what do I do if they want to just "replace the port" if its a faulty port? Part of me just wants to opt out altogether and say take it out. Go for the sleeve? My family was against me doing this anyway. However, I have had success with the band. I've had some hiccups here and there, but nothing that I couldn't pull through.

I have been reading these blogs about the misery people have had with the testing they do to dertermine this. Sometimes takes months. I am just so lost. I know this is not something I have done. However, if the band has slipped due to losing all of the fluid, it will have to be repositioned which equals another surgery. So not looking forward to this!

Love my band, saddened by this unexpected news!

Cheers~

I am not in that boat but was worried due to lack of fills for several years WHAT if I had a leak. Before they even checked, I asked what would happen or what it would consist of. I was told it is not all that rough or even to the degree of what we went through when we had the initial surgery. That it is pretty easy, I guess they just pull out the old port put in a new one and attach it. That the leak is not generally even with the band itself. If I had to do something I would opt for just getting the port fixed and not do the sleeve, but that is me.. Keep us posted!!

With Gastric Bypass and the Sleeve you can actually re-stretch your stomach and gain back weight if you're not careful. I have two friends that got each procedure, lost all kinds of weight in the first year and gained back at least half if not all of it by the 3 yr mark. I would say though that the sleeve seems like the way to go if your gonna revise because at least they aren't playing with your intestines, although cutting off a chunk of my stomach doesn't sound like much fun either. I would say that as far as less invasive surgery and recovery time you would be better off having them fix the band, but in the end it is a very personal choice and I wish you luck!

My band broke for the 2nd time. I was banded originally in Feb 2010 everything was going great losing weight, exercising, learning how to cook, shop, and balance mylife when I went in for a fill in Sept of 2011 and they couldn't pull any fluid out or put any in. I went for an xray and my bang tube disconnected from the port , so I had it fixed in Nov 2011. Recovery wasn't great, developed this pain along my ribs on the right when I take a deep breathe and some times get muscle spasms there. I use muscle relaxers and heating pad nightly. Went to see my doctor on June 12th to schedule another repair. He is going to take my port out and put a whole new one in. I love my band and what it has helped me accomplish so much so I'm willing to risk going through another painful recovery if it gives me back the control I had. I have only put back on 6 pounds but I feel like I'm in a holding pattern, I can't exercise, because it pulls when I move, and I feel like I'm falling behind in my progress. I wish you well and encourage you to sit down with your doc and really discuss your options. I wanted to have the band taken out and go with the sleeve too, but when I sat down with my doc he told me "you didn't fail the band the band mechanically failed you" and up until this point I was successful, so I decided to give it another chance and if it breaks again I will definatly go for the sleeve. Good luck I hope it all works out for you.
