As you guys know, I am just getting started on this weight loss journey. I have my doctor's appt the 13th of April and meet with the surgeon on the 27th. I know this is a big decision and for the most part I am so excited. But now people are telling me that I shouldn't have surgery because it is dangerous and blah blah blah. Not for nothing it is really pissing me off and I don't know what to do. Any advice?

Know what your getting into and any kind of surgery is dangerous if you want to be technical about it lol. Make sure you have a good doctor and that you know all the risk. I was scared and i had been told it didn't work but here i am today 85lbs lighter in a size Large from an XXXL and a pant size of 11 from a 20. So if its what you want and what you think is best for you don't let anyone ever get you down!!!!! Its your life and you have live the way that you want to. People are sometimes downers and you should ask them if they have ever had it. Listen to your head and your heart. And again make sure you have a good doctor that knows what he is doing. But that's a little important in any surgery right??? I think so Good luck and Keep your head up. Ask your Dr questions they know more then most people about what they are doing.

I got the same advice from alot of ppl. I personally did a lot of research and you are doing the #1 safest surgery when it comes to Weight Loss. I was banded on March 1st with no complications, 3 other ladies I know are having it done. We are all doing it kind of together. The worst thing I endured was GAS pain. Dont let anyone talk you out of the best thing you could do for YOU! I hope all will go well for you as it has done for me.

That comes from people who know nothing about lapband and living with procedure. It comes from from ignorance. It comes from caring but the ultimate choice is yours. Are you happy with your quality of life as it is? Can you lose the weight yourself and keep it off? You will ask yourself these questions over and over and do the I want it I don't until the moment you get lapband and a few weeks later you have lost weight you didn't think you could. This is the best place to ask questions, ask for information, I hope it turns out well for you

Just tell those negative people that being obese is far more 'dangerous' from the life threatening illnesses that you can get and that those stats far outweigh any 'dangers' from having a minor op like a lapband.. would they say the same if u were having your wisdom teeth out ?

list all the 'co-morbities' u can get with obesity and then try and list any from actually living with a lapband, there are none, any 'danger' from a lapband is to do with surgery in general .. and this surgery is normally less than 1 hour long.. I hope u can make a decision based on what you need and not on other peoples ignorance..

I got that from someone I expected to be my biggest support, my mom. Any surgery is going to have risks. This is one of the safest and has the shortest recovery time. I asked a ton of questions and felt so at ease when I went it. My surgeon was great. I was banded on 2/15 and I feel great. The first few days were rough for me but it took about a week or so before I was 100%. I found so much information and support here, and hopefully you will too!

Yes, the surgery has a risk as does any, but my response to the people that say this to you is this---I am at a greater risk of dying staying the weight I am or larger and not doing anything about it. I don't know about you, but I was all about the one time risk of a 40 minute surgery as opposed to a life time of a bomb ticking...my heart!!!! You will be fine! If it feels like the right thing to do, to you, then it is!!

The only thing you can do is to ignore. If it's someone that you value their opinion - just thank them for their input. Being obese is a greater risk factor for death than the surgery! I pray you have no complications - but even the people in our support group that have had problems said they'd do it again in a heartbeat! Everyone will feel obligied to give you their opinion - it's up to you what you do with it.

press ignore button---,,, ask God to guide you, and speak to your Dr and your confidant. These people don't know you. It is a personal decison, they can tell thier story, but not invade my freedom to choose. Stay strong missy... and look ahead-

Who's life is it? Yours or their's? I took my life into my own hands almost 3 years ago and chose to become healthy with this LB tool. I would recommend this to anyone who needs to lose as much as I did. I chose not to tell anyone and kept it to myself. I blog to the world on this site, it helps to keep honest. It has helped me so much. This was my journey to a healthier me. I have lost 100 plus pounds and have kept it off. I know I have added 10 years to my life. I do not have headaches anymore, no more pain medicine, no more sleep apnea, high blood pressure meds, gone, knee pain, gone, I am a normal weight and I like what I see in the mirror. What more could I have asked for. I encourage keeping a positive attitude and it really is all about the choices we make for ourselves. I eat real food not too much mostly plants and eat my proteins first. Keep blogging and best wishes imaluckydog

Before my surgery my family and friends were telling me the same thing. "The surgery is dangerous. You can lose weight on your own. " The list goes on and on. At the end of the day it is your decision, no one has to live in your shoes, but you. Having lap band surgery was the best thing I could have done. I am more energetic and on the road to a healthy and fulfilling life.

I told myself the same negative things about the surgery when others around me were having it...look at me now:) I still haven't told my mom because I know she would have come at me like that...:/

Hopefully they say it out of love and concern. But obesity is dangerous. I saw my regular Dr last week for check up and she looked at my recent labs and said, you've just saved yourself from being diabetic. I was boarderline and meds were in my near furture. If you do the research you can be better informed to deal with their concerns and be more comfortable with your decision. If people see your worried it will increase their worries. Good luck.

I agree with all of these statements above. I had a couple of negative reactions. I was even negative to myself about it a couple of times. But I prayed and asked God to guide. Finally, He gave me this question: "If your doctor said all of your arteries were blocked and you needed to have quadruple bypass surgery, would you hesitate?" My answer was "No. I would trust God to get me through that so I'm trusting Him to bring me through this." You can too. God bless you on this journey.
