Outsiders Perspective: The Bbq Dilemma

Capital Regional Medical Center in Tallahassee has a new senoir leadership member. We had a welcoming celebration for him today in the cafeteria. A favorite local BBQ joint catered the event, and since I am on the activities committee, I helped dish the food out to everyone for an hour or so. I had fun doing it, and it was a great event overall. I am excited for our facility! The future looks bright for CRMC and the Bariatric Center.

 

That being said (and working in Bariatrics) I couldn't help but think (from an outsiders point of view) how hard event's like these could potentially be on a Lap-Band patient, especially a new Lap-Band patient. We have 2 lines of BBQ being served out as a form of celebration. What if you can't have BBQ? Or, even worse, what if you REALLY like BBQ, BUT you shouldn't have it, but want to be involved in the event? I mean, I try to eat healthy, but I fell weak to the temptation and grabbed a plate. Would it be cheating to a Lap-Band patient, even though the environmental pressures are so elevated it's almost considered "anti-social" not to participate?

 

Society doesn't make it easy to come to terms with obesity, and it makes it even harder to fight. It helps me remember how much hard work, dedication, and attention goes into pre/post opp lifetstyles of a Lap-Band patient. I don't claim to fully understand because I do not have a band inside of me. But I've struggled with weight loss and know it's trials. I am amazed at the strength and tenacity of those individuals fighting to improve in any way, and I tip my hat to you all. In my eyes, you are all warriors, surrounded on all sides, fighting back the masses, and winning!!!

 

As my Grandpa used to tell me, "Go get 'em tiger!" Grrr...

We just discovered Famous Dave's bbq less than a week before my wife got banded. It was an instant new favorite, but I wonder if she will ever be able to eat there again!

I was banded August, 2011 and I can tell you I still have bbq every so often. It is not something that I eat on a regular basis, but only on a "special occasion.". I consciously make healthy choices.

So, don't fret, hubby, your wife will be able to do it.

Outsider, you are kind to want to know this info. Where I work we have frequent potlucks...and I have no problem passing up the desserts, pastas, rice dishes, potato salads, breads, etc. I am very selective on what I choose, tho. Today we had a potluck with a mexican theme...I had cottage cheese with homemade salsa in it, yogurt, steamed broccoli, some shredded green chili, 2 meatballs. a few corn chips with some type of cheese dip. I did succumb to the pink stuff tho. It was delish!!! For the most part, healthy choices.

our work does breakfast Fridays from a nearby mexican restaurant, I ordered a burrito with eggs, beans potatos, and I went wild and got cheese. I cut little less than a 1/3 and refoiled the rest, and I was good, didn't eat tortilla. I started watching what I ate by watching others in the office . That made me more concious about my health. No more morning danishes, or donuts (if your name is in the paper) pizza parties, I will grab one slice (eat toppings) don't want to offend the honoree. and so far have been good. I feel bad because I have a coworker much younger than me, who has watched me go through my health issues and now Im losing weight, but she continues to eat non-stop. I used to tell her watch your health, watch your health, but I think it upset her and I just stopped. So I sit at my desk with a Crystal Lite on my desk and she sits at hers with a little pile of danish,candy or starbucks (everyday). each to their own.

I miss my buffalo wing sauce, I was just getting the taste for it. I'm sure well all find our niches, what works for one won't work for another. I had bbq sauce with chicken other night. Hubby had watered it down, so I could get flavor, mmmm.

im only 10 weeks banded (down 22 lbs !!) but so far i can eating EVERYTHING ! is this normal ? i had my 3rd fill mon feb 27th and so far im pretty sure im in the green zone. i can only eat a little bit at one sitting, and have lost 3 lbs this week ! . im eating homemade barbq chicken wings, fresh broccoli, . fresh pineapple, apples, nuts, salad etc with no problems as long as i eat slow and chew well. since i can eat so little ive made sure that 95% of what i eat is healthy or high in protein, as i have thin hair to begin with. when i absolutley have to have something sweet i take a few bites of a chocolate protein bar. this whole thing sure makes you reevaluate what foods are important, doesnt it ? hope all continues to go well with you, you're doing great and setting a good example for your co-workers too !!

The world will go on... I decided tp follow in a different journey and happy with it. My sis is same height and can't make 100 lbs unless pregnant. It is what it is. I try to join the party and events but pick the better portion of healthy food.

I look for the healthiest Band friendly food available. I had dinner at a barbecue place a few weeks ago. They had a shredded chicken sandwich. I tossed the white bread roll and ate the shredded chicken with fork. I had a few bites from my DH's baked beans. I was full and happy.
