Anybody With Manic Depression/bipolar Been Banded?

I was recently diagnosed ith bipolar/manic depression. I had thought about lapband before, but never this seriously. My mom had the procedure in 2005, and I have seen first hand the struggle and success. I want to be a healthier and hopefully happier me. I was wondering if anyone else w bipolar has had the procedure, and if so, how it has affected their depression? Im on an arsenal of medications to battle it, but am wondering if after lapband the meds could or would be reduced? Any help would be appreciated. Also windering if anyone was banded in Louisiana, or how much cash pay in the south would be? Im funding with my tax return

While I can't talk about the cost I can talk about the bipolar aspect...I've been treated for depression for many years but was told last year by a new psych he thought it was bipolar instead. I've had the band for 14 months and it has not affected what meds I take or the doseage - yet. It was not ruled out as the doctor knows of my lapband. I do know when I exercise more I feel better and with less weight I do exercise more so that helps my mood stabilize. The psych did give me another pill (Abilify) and that seems to have made the difference added to my other med for depression. As far as the cost I'd check with the doctors you want to use and see what they charge and make sure you tell them cash pay because you frequently get a lower price! Good luck as it can be the best investment you make with that money - your health... Linda

I have been treated for bipolar for many years. Just was banded Dec. 15. All of the Doctors including my psychiatriast tell me medication will not be a problem. No changes in prescribed meds. I take Cymbalta and Lamictal.

So far everything is normal.

I am amased how normal I can eat and take meds. I expected not to be able to swollow or something but not at all. Just sometimes if I eat and do liquids very full.

I have also been treated for bipolar for many years and I am being banded on 1/18. I don't think my meds will be a problem; however, I have had thoughts of one getting stuck. What did bother me the most is the nurse said I needed "Psych Eval" which was a little upsetting only because I am self-pay, fully able to make my own decisions, and felt that what I wanted to do should not be left up to my doctor to decide. I am of sound mind and not some loony bin. lol

I was diagnosed bipolar 5 years ago. I took wellbutrin and geodon. Had Lap-band may 25, 2010. My psychiatrist told me to try going off my geodon and let him know how it goes. I have been off it now for at least 8 months now and only on wellbutrin. He has now changed my diagnosis to just depression and ocd with anxiety. So no longer considered bipolar. I think just feeling better about myself, eating better, and exercising helped me a ton. Good luck!
