Gasrtric Bypass after Gastric Banding???

I have been doing some thinking lately and am considering potentially going to the weightloss clinic near home ( my lap band was done near work an hour away) and inquiring about the bypass surgery. I'm beginning to feel that maybe I should have made the decision for bypass instead of the band. My insurance has no restrictions and would cover it as long as I am still at a BMI of 40 or over. Has anyone known someone that has done this? Any thoughts? I'm open to suggestions or feedback. I just feel after 4 months with the band I'm not nearly where I would want to be and wonder if the bypass would work better..

Lee, Yes there are people who have moved on to gastric bypass surgery. Just a caution, weight loss is a journey and is not a quick fix. I also know lots of people who have had the bypass to only be back to where they were in the beginning. This process whether lap band, sleeve or bypass is about learning discipline, good habits and changing behavior. i realize that may not be a popular response on this site but it is true. We did not get fat over night and we are not going to get skinny over night. If you do decide to have the bypass surgery do it becasue it is the right thing for your health, not becasue you want to lose weight faster. Ok said my peace, I will shut up now. You can be successful, you can lose with the band, give yourself time before you rush into somehing else. Best of luck!

Lee this journey takes time and a lot of work on our parts. I have worked hard to get to where I am and know my work is paying off. Four months is not long at all, some bandsters take years to lose their weight. I all depends on how you use your tool. Give yourself time and follow the program. You can do it

Another option besides bypass would be the gastric sleeve, however, I personally would keep trucking with the band really track what you're doing and eating and see what you can change. The band is ONLY supposed to help you eat less. You've gotta pick what you eat and how much you exercise.

I'm not sure why your band isn't working how you think it should.. but if there's any chance at all that it's not working because you're not helping it, then the gastric bypass and the gastric sleeve won't work for you either. It's possible to cheat ALL gastric surgeries by eating the wrong things, and not changing your habits. And like LovetheNewMe said, I too know two people who have had gastric bypass, lost all of their weight, and now weigh more than they did when they started. I also know 1 person who did that with their band and have heard of MANY more.

You have the perfect tool. This isn't an easy journey.. I hope you will give your band the chance to do it's thing for you. 4 months isn't that long.. if you do what you're supposed to do, nomatter how hard it is, I don't see how you can't lose your weight eventually unless there is some other medical issue not being addressed.. in which case I'm out of my league for advice.

Hang in there!! YOU CAN DO THIS!!

I would suggest you give yourself some more time before getting another surgery. it's only been 4 months. i'm 7 months out and i'm not where i thought i would be either, but i also have had 4 fills 2 unfills, just havent found my green zone. are you following up with your appointments and getting fills? are you in the green zone, working out? not trying to badger you, just want you to give it more time.

just my 2 cents

Thank you everyone for the feedback and I appreciate it all including the "tough love". I am planning on giving the band more time and I have been really working it. I do know one thing I actually need to do more of believe it or not is eat. I think my body is starving and wants to hold onto its fat. I generally prefer protein shakes over solid food, not because I can't eat but because I feel safer with liquids but my body probably isn't getting everything it needs. I'm also hypo-thyroid due to a complete thyroidectomy so that makes it more difficult. I have deciced to continue with the band but at the same time attend meetings and session for the bypass. I don't need to go ahead with the bypass but I want to jump in the program in case I decide to do it. I know the band is a tool and its not going to happen overnight just very very frustrating as everyone is aware.

thanks again
