I have decided to have the lap band, my surgery is not until September. My biggest concern is chewing my food enough and waiting at least 20 seconds between bites. Any advise?

you will seriously need to chew every bite until it is almost liquid then wait a minute before the next bite, if you dont do this it is very likely you will be sick.

I still havent conquered it 100%, but Im slowly learning my lesson:)

Good luck! Its the best thing I have ever done, I hope you feel the same :)

One way is to take a bite and set your fork/spoon down and then continue to chew. Then pick up your utensil and repeat the process. Also as ezjulz said you will learn that you have to obey or it will not be fun! Also, I have not met one person on here that has not had to learn this lesson the hard way..it is just a matter of time or your slip up and forget. Take care and I wish you the very best on your journey!!!

Follow the rules, we are all good at that especially if we want something like losing weight as bad as we do. Both comments above are spot on. I have been banded over 2 years and still take my time and enjoy every single bite. I savor the flavor of my food now. I also eat way less and way slow. I use to laugh at my fork resting on the plate, I would see just how long I could leave it there. It became a game for me. We food lovers eat too, too fast. I have to tell you I have lost 110 pounds and just had my full body "Nip and Tuck". I feel even better in my new and improved healthy body. Make sure you take the time to heal as it is from the inside out! I eat small to be small. I eat REAL food not processed anything. I take my time, I started to practise as soon as I got me date so start now and it will be a habit by the time your band date gets here. Best wishes on you journey. imaluckydog

one of the worst things for me is to eat is bread......and you can throw pasta in the mix also.....I had surgery back 2008,and those things still give me trouble. Not that I'm complaining.....because ,the out come is great....It is so worth dealing with giving up bread and pasta,to look and feel as I do now....and believe me you will be happy with your results....I look at it as a small price to pay for happiness....and I think you will to....On the plus side I can still eat chocolate in moderation, and have a glass of wine, when I'm out to dinner with my friends...Just take heed and follow the instructions in the beginning....they are to help you and they will

Been banded nearly 1 year now and I can tell you that after many fills and un-fills I am at a good place. I eat slowly, but I find I dont have to eat as slowly as I did when I was filled tighter. I eat anything - there is nothing off limits to me. Im at 6 cc's and I dont get anything stuck anymore. However, I spent 8 months getting stuck and throwing up. Dont thinkk going tighter means more weight loss... it didnt for me. Like others have said, not allowing anything to pass over your throat until its mush is KEY. So, no matter what you eat, IF YOU ARENT OVER FILLED, it shouldnt be a problem

I do not wait 20 seconds in between, but I definitely chew a lot more than I ever did before and it really seems to help. I haven't had a problem yet. As I chew I think about the size of the opening and make sure the food is small enough to go through.

Start practicing chewing, chewing and putting your fork down in between now. I started the month before my surgery. It helped a little but when you are hungry you forget all of that. Also remember to cut small pieces, the size of a pencil eraser and chew, chew. It will take time to learn how to chew your food. Good luck.
