I did Progresso light soups, the clam chowder was my fav! But make sure you put a powdered vitamin in when you heat it up.

I have posted the same comment on several people's posts about the pre-op diet. That is strictly done for insurance purposes. It does NOT need to be done for surgery. This is what was explained to us by the bariatric surgeons. They just need to document that they told you to do the diet and you are able to lose weight- meaning you are committed. That is the only reason. So dont stress out about keeping an all liquid diet like that.

Each Dr. is different too. I had a special pre-diet shake, bars and this terrible soup that I couldn't get done. I talked to the Nurse and said if the soup was the only thing I couldn't tolerate then to eat so much protein instead. It made the 10 day pre-diet so much better. Good Luck!

Thanks everyone, they explained it to us that we had to do this strictly! because it will shrink your Liver and the fat around your stomach allowing for a better view for the surgeon, so that is why we have to do this or that's what they told us.

The surgeons said if you are extremely overweight - like over 400 lbs... that may be true. They need to give you a reason, they cant just say you are doing it for insurance purposes. There is some truth in what they said about the fat around the liver.

Brendac40, I ate sugar free jello and puddin, lots of soup including Applebees cream of brocc., drank my protein with blended fruit (banana, berry, no apples or oranges ) and lost 15lbs. before surgery. I don't understand why people tell other NOT TO DO THE DIET.... if over 95% of the doctors are telling there patients, it must be important. You have to ask your self what kind of outcome do you want from this surgery.. Do you want to start off good are start by already cheating and trying to get around it? Are do what the doctors say and have success? I would be lying if i said i didn't cheat, I did, i ate a couple chips one day. But other than that, i stuck to the diet. It was hard, but you have to fellow the diet after surgery anyway, so get use to it...... You can do this, if i could... anybody can. Lapband is not easy. I wish you all the success in the world. Good luck

The purpose of a pre-surgery diet is to:

  • Reduce body fat around the stomach and liver, as well as shrink the liver itself. If the liver is too large, the surgery may have to be postponed.
  • Improve surgical outcomes and recovery. By reducing fatty triglycerides from around the liver and spleen, it can reduce potential surgical bleeding.
  • Increase protein intake, which will help preserve and protect muscle tissue.

The pre-surgery diet will also prepare Lap-Band patients for the post-op diet and increase the rate of weight loss following surgery.
