The FDA has approved lap band for people with a BMI over 30 , that's me BMI 32. I'm just starting my research and could really use your advice. I will have to self pay, the insurance companies will take forever to follow these guidelines, so what did you or your insurance pay? I figure the cost will never add up to what I have spent on those other programs ie: pills, programs, delivered meals...you know what I mean....would you self pay for a band? Thank you for your help.

I would, and I did! And I'd do it again! 15K for me. Included the hospital overnight stay, surgery and several follow ups! :)

Were you fills included in that price? I found a couple of places here that run $14,000 and no follow is included.

$12,500 for me in illinois...including all pre-op testing and follow-up/fills for first year! I'd do it again in a heart beat!

$12,500 for me, too! I was at 32bmi just for a year. My insurance company said I had to have a BMI of 30 or higher for three years. I figured I would be dead by then! Best money I ever spent and it included a year's worth of follow up and fills.

Good luck & please keep us posted!

Hello

I had a low BMI and i was self pay. I only paid $5500 in Mexico, and I didn't have to go through any approvals either. I know some people frown up at the thought of going to Mexico but I actually had a wonderful experience. Dr. Jose Rodriguez, he is the doctor on you tube performing the single port band which is what I also got. The hospital was state of the art, clean, the nurses were nice and my husband and I felt very safe. I will go back for my first fill under xray and it will only cost me about $150 instead of $400 to $500 that is charged in the US for self pay. Some people may think I don't need to loose any weight but I do for health reasons. Oh don't let me forget to mention that that price included 2 night stays for my husband and I in the hospital. VERY NICE!!!!!

Good luck in your decision.

I paid 13K in Pennsylvania and fills are NOT included. You are on the smaller side already. Is it worth it....? Im not so sure. It seems like the people who have a lot of weight to lose end up losing weight quickly and are satisfied. The people who are on the smaller side to begin with have a very difficult and S L O W process. Its been 9 months for me and I still only lose 1 lb a week - if that. I love the band because it keeps me from gaining weight.... but really, the weight loss now is mostly because of me dieting and working out - not really the band. Talk to all kinds of people before you persue this. Many people do not end up satisfied if they are on the smaller side to begin with. Its MUCH harder than you think.

Thank you all for the information. I made an appointment for a consultation with Dr. Jamokay Taylor here in Michigan. I'm so excited to meet with this surgeon because I have heard such good things about him for his patients. Will keep you updated after my consultation. By the way his self pay price is $13,000.00....that's good news to start.
